What is GIS? GIS stands for Geographical Information Systems. This technology helps us create maps and work with location data. In Dorset Council, our GIS team helps people find, use, and create maps and data to support local services. About the Role: As a GIS Web Development Assistant, you’ll learn how GIS and location data are used at the council to help provide online services to the community. You’ll also see how we use programming platforms like .NET to create GIS-based web applications (online tools) for people to use. You’ll get a chance to learn about other parts of GIS and the larger ICT (Information and Communications Technology) team too, including how we work with location data and addresses across the council. What You’ll Do: During your placement, you’ll: Learn about how GIS is used in the council. Help answer questions from council staff about GIS. Assist with building and updating web applications that use maps and data. Help develop, update, and use the council’s GIS systems. Work on projects that involve GIS and the Local Land Property Gazetteer (a list of addresses that’s used by many council services). Provide general support with admin tasks. Take on other tasks related to the role. About You: To make the most of this role, you should: Be adaptable and open to learning new things. Enjoy working as part of a team. Location: The placement will take place at one of our offices in Dorchester, Wareham or Weymouth. Flexibility is offered to all applicants on the format of the work experience. Hours: To be agreed. Monday to Friday (9am – 3pm with 30 mins for lunch) Travel: Transport to and from placement to be arranged by student. Meals: If in the office, bring a packed lunch, or you are welcome to walk into town to buy lunch. A café is available onsite at the Dorchester office. Times of breaks to be discussed.
