Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust are looking to appoint a Trust Grade (ST1 level) doctor to work in Obstetricsics and Gynaecology. This is a fixed-term position.
You will work a full shift rota and you will be well supported by senior colleagues during your tenure with us.

You must have full registration with the General Medical Council, hold a Licence to Practise and be eligible to work in the UK.
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department is based on one site in Scunthorpe although antenatal and gynaecology clinics and theatre sessions also occur in Goole Hospital, 30 miles to the west. The maternity unit, NICU and administrative offices are all located within the Queen’s Building in Scunthorpe. Antenatal clinics, gynaecology out-patients and colposcopy and the gynaecology in-patients beds are all located within the newly-opened Women’s Health Unit, again within the Queen’s Building.

The gynaecology ward is housed within a new Unit. We have facilities for outpatient hysteroscopy and colposcopy, early pregnancy assessment, pregnancy advisory including the provision of medical terminations, MVAC and preoperative assessment. Preoperative assessment, medical terminations, appointments for hyperemesis and early pregnancy assessment are nurse based with medical lead. We also have the use of a variable number of day beds in the day care unit. Ultrasound scanning in Obstetrics and Gynaecology is generally performed by sonographers from the X-ray Department and Mr Roberts, Fetal Medicine Consultant. This department provides a comprehensive ultrasound service including a limited out of hours availability. The antenatal clinic is equipped with two modern scanners including facilities for Doppler and vaginal scans. Three extra mobile ultrasound scanners are available for use on Labour ward, antenatal clinic and antenatal ward. The scan department is supported by one nurse and one midwife sonographer and three weekly consultant fetal medicine clinics.

Your primary responsibilities are the day to daycare of the patients in their allocated ward area and will participate in the 1st on-call rota.
You will be assisted in developing your own areas of interest and expertise to augment the provision of the service. The department provides obstetric and gynaecological care for Goole. This is achieved by one of the consultant team, supported by junior. It is not envisaged that the successful applicant will play a part in this service.
1. To be based in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department
The post holder’s primary responsibility is the day to day care of the patients in their allocated ward and taking part in the 1st ON CALL ROTA. The post holder will receive instruction in procedures and help with management from senior colleagues. He/she will be expected to know their patients in detail and to present them on ward rounds and handover. He/she will be responsible for chasing up results of investigations using SBAR agreed on the ward round.
• The post-holder will be assisted in developing his own areas of interest and expertise to augment the provision of the service. The post-holder will maintain his standard of performance by keeping knowledge and skills up to date.
• The post-holder will provide cover for absent colleagues in line with his service agreements with the trust, both within and outside normal working hours, along with flexible use of time depending on the needs of the department
• The post-holder will assist in ensuring that preoperative checks have been carried out and investigations are to hand and discharge summary information completed.
• To attend the labour ward, gynae ward and theatre and clinics
The supervising consultant for this post is Miss Gandhi although there will be the opportunity to gain experience in most surgical specialties as this post is expected to be attached to the on-call team and provide support to theatre and clinics when required.
1. Documentation
It is essential to appropriately document history taking, examination, investigations requested with results and a plan of action to discharge after treatment or admit. (document time of action for every step.)
1. Supervision/Training
The middle-grade doctors in the department work an on-call/full-shift rota, and the Consultants work an on-call rota.
Trust Grade doctors are expected to attend departmental teaching and audit and to participate actively.
Although this post is not recognised for training, Trust Grade doctors are expected to apply for study leave and attend appropriate courses including mandatory training.
Consultants and Specialty Doctors or Registrars are available on the shop floor to provide supervision/opinion for patient management.
Doctors should not leave the hospital without permission from the Consultant or his Deputy.
A duty rota will be published for the department by the Rota Coordinator and published on to the intranet, as well as circulated via email. It would be your responsibility to check the updated version of rota.
Sickness - contact Consultant/Secretary and the Rota Co-ordinator early in the morning to give time to arrange cover. Over weekend, contact must be made as early as possible (preferably Friday morning).
1. Unforeseen Duties
In exceptional circumstances, e.g. colleagues’ sickness, the post holder may be required to undertake duties more frequently than anticipated, but in such circumstances every effort will be made to contract locums. If it is necessary to cover colleagues’ duties, internal locum rates will be paid. It has been agreed between the professions and the department that while juniors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this subsection are exceptional and, in particular, that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
1. Discharge Summaries
The post holder will be trained in the techniques of composing discharge summaries which should be completed and sent promptly to the General Practitioners. Specific arrangements for these summaries vary with each Consultant.
1. Policies/Protocols
Potholders are expected to acquaint themselves with relevant guidelines and policies which may be changed from time to time. All are available on the intranet.
1. Cardiac Arrest
All doctors are expected to familiarise themselves with the cardiac arrest protocol, which can be obtained from the medical secretaries.
1. Audit
You may be required to attend the departmental audit sessions and become involved in this process.
1. Hours Monitoring and the New Deal
All training junior doctors will be required to monitor their hours of work and rest during a set period at least once during a six month period of employment. Although this post is not recognised for training, you may be requested to complete monitoring so an overview of the rota can be obtained.
