The role The Fugro Marine Environmental team is looking for an enthusiastic Sediment and Water Quality Scientist to join our Sediment Laboratory and Water Quality department based in Portchester, Hampshire on a full-time contract. Working as a pivotal part of the team, you will primarily be responsible for supporting the development of rapid microbiological testing services, sediment laboratory analysis and water quality sampling activities, and contributing to high quality technical outputs. The Marine Environmental team specialises in environmental site characterisation and environmental monitoring. The data we collect enables our clients and regulatory organisations to fully understand the effects of developments and activities in the coastal and marine environment. After receiving the necessary training, your role will be to support the development of rapid microbiological based testing services, perform laboratory testing of marine sediment and water samples for size distribution, loss on ignition, total suspended solids and other associated tests, to conduct water quality sampling for microbiological monitoring projects at local schools, leisure centres and onboard cruise ships. Additional duties involve administration and housekeeping tasks. You will ensure all activities are carried out to company specific standards and are in line with our QHSSE policies. Here’s what a typical day would be like: You will support the development of rapid microbiological testing services; You will prepare sediment and water samples from projects globally for testing and then run a series of tests as prescribed by the client; You will conduct water quality sampling of swimming pools at schools and leisure centres located around the Hampshire and West Sussex region; You will conduct water quality sampling of recreational and potable water facilities onboard cruise ships, typically located in and around the South and South West regions; You will contribute towards the production of sediment and water quality results and test certificates; You will assist in maintaining UKAS (ISO: 17025) accreditation for the laboratory testing/sampling activities, including conducting standard procedures, quality control checks, equipment maintenance and laboratory records, as allocated; You will assist in the general maintenance of the laboratory and water quality department including house-keeping, sample storage and sample tracking. Please note that whilst this position requires a 37.5hr week, the company may be able to offer flexibility around working hours and would be happy to discuss this at interview. However, weekend working, working away from home, and overtime will be required from time to time. Who we’re looking for: Essential BSc in Microbiology, Marine Science, Environmental Science or relevant equivalent; Experience of working within a relevant commercial laboratory / microbiology laboratory; Experience of microbiological analysis including rapid tests; Clean UK driving licence; Availability to work potential shift patterns / weekends and participation in a weekend rota; Troubleshooting skills; Ability to work unsupervised and take ownership of tasks; Excellent in teamwork and communication within the team; Strong organisational skills; Good Microsoft Office capabilities; Excellent numeracy, literacy and oral communication skills; Proven ability to work to deadlines.
