Job overview
We would like to find a new Band 6 Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Nurse to join our team and help run the day to day services provided by our current IBD nursing team. The successful candidate will work alongside the IBD Specialist Nurses and MDT, providing support, advice and improved access for both inpatients and outpatients at the Royal London & Mile End Hospital with IBD. Responsibilities will include telephone assessment of patients, face to face clinical review and involvement in the planning and delivery of biological therapies. This is a full-time permanent position, which will suit a dynamic and motivated nurse with interest in the management and care of IBD, and a desire to develop their knowledge in this area, providing an excellent opportunity to do so within an established IBD specialist nursing team. Training and supervision will be provided within the role from both nursing and medical supervisors, along with opportunities to attend relevant study as appropriate. Main duties of the job
This is a senior nursing post within the Trust which will combine clinical, educational, audit, research and managerial skills in order to enhance IBD management within Barts Health Trust. The post holder will provide support to patients, families and the staff caring for them, and function as a resource and an advocate in the specialty. In collaboration with the multi professional team they will influence patient care ensuring that patients with IBD receive the highest standard of clinical care and have access to the full resources of the multi professional team in hospital and community settings.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. To act as a role model and provide expert advice and support for patients with IBD.
2. To promote a multi-professional approach through joint visits/clinics/working with ward team.
3. Be knowledgeable about treatment modalities for IBD and the appropriate monitoring of these therapies and fulfil a role as advocate to enable patients to make informed decisions.
4. When appropriate to offer support to staff caring for patients with IBD.
5. Maintain a support network and contact line for patients and carers throughout the course of their illness.
6. Manage and run a day case infusion clinic for patients receiving biological therapies and other infusions as appropriate, including patient monitoring and future expansion of this service.
7. Participate in the IBD MDM as a core member of the MDT.
8. Act as a patients advocate and counsel when informed discussion may lead choices being made concerning treatment options.
9. Be actively involved in information prescription for patients and their families / carers regarding their disease, treatment and services available to them.
10. Be aware of the mechanisms for identifying, reporting and managing clinical risk, and ensure that there are resulting action plans.
11. Support other health professionals in their general communication skills and in the breaking of significant news acting as a role model and example of good practice.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Relevant Degree or commitment to working towards.
* Commitment to relevant career development opportunities.
* ENB 998 or equivalent.
* Advance Communication Skills training or commitment to taking.
* Enthusiasm to present at conferences / write for publication.
Experience
* 5 years F/T post registration experience, including 3 years recent experience in a GI setting.
* Experience in providing multi professional education.
* Experience / enthusiasm to participate in audit or research.
* Experience of leading on service development projects.
Knowledge
* Expert knowledge of complex case management Able to demonstrate regular updating of knowledge and learning.
* Knowledge of IBD and its management.
