Consultant in Upper GI and General Surgery

Applications are invited for a new permanent consultant post in General Surgery, with a specialist interest in Upper GI Surgery.
The successful candidate will be a fulltime permanent appointment. The Upper GI team at the Countess of Chester deals with the full range of benign oesophogastric disease. Regarding malignant disease, our team liaise with our regional tertiary centres.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate would be expected to complement our existing team of consultants and integrate within our team to provide a complete General Surgery service. The successful candidate would be expected to have a subspecialty interest in Upper GI surgery with evidence of independent practice in Laparoscopic cholecystectomy and anti-reflux surgery. To complement our existing department, it would be desirable to have experience in ERCP and laparoscopic hernias. We would want the successful candidate to lead on and help drive forward our acute cholecystectomy service, so experience within this field would also be desirable.
In addition to the management of general surgical cases and participation in a Consultant Surgeon of the Week (CSOW) rota. All consultants are expected to participate in the on-call rota (1 in 10 following appointment).
The Countess of Chester holds a national reputation for excellence in Research. The successful candidate would be expected to have experience of involvement in NIHR portfolio studies and would ideally have been PI for one of these. We would want the successful candidate to have experience of supervising Deanery Resident doctors and Foundation doctors, and to have a keen interest in training.

Person Specification
* Full GMC registration
* An appropriate higher surgical qualification
* Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights
Research
* Evidence of Publications in refereed journals, Presentations at international, national and regional level and Commitment to research
* Previous experience of Clinical Trials
Audit
* Evidence of morbidity/mortality audit, unit and specific audit and understand risk assessment
Relevant experience in General Surgery
* Commitment to consultant surgeon of the week for surgical emergencies.
* Competence in the management of the multi-injured patient
* Competence in laparoscopic cholecystectomy
Relevant experience in Upper GI Surgery
* Evidence of independent operating in the indicator procedures in colorectal surgery, Competence in Upper GI endoscopy and Commitment to clinical audit and research
* Expertise in ERCP
* Post CCT Fellowship
* Evidence of attendance at management course, management in practice and understanding of the NHS and aware of the management/political agenda and its implications for the service
Teaching
* Evidence of teaching to medical students, junior doctors, other PAMS and Operative teaching to SpR and CST trainees
* Postgraduate qualification in medical education
Personal
* Evidence of ability to work in a surgical team, Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, Insight, Ability to work under pressure and Caring and responsible attitude to colleagues and patients
