We have the following two exciting opportunities in the analytical teams within the Economic Security and Trade Relations DG area:
The first role is in the Market access and trade relations analysis (MATRA) team. We work with the International Strategy and Trade Relations Directorate to shape the economic relationship of the UK with the rest of the world. MATRA is a multi-disciplinary and dynamic team of 14 analysts consisting of Economists, Social researchers, Statisticians and Operational researchers. We provide high-quality analysis and evidence base that supports decision making in prioritising and removing Market Access barriers and identifying trade opportunities that help business export. As a key analytical unit, we collaborate with two other G6 teams to provide high-quality, timely monitoring and analysis of critical supply chains. Our work includes mapping critical supply chains, analysing vulnerabilities, assessing the impacts of disruptive events, developing tools to monitor risks and providing analytical support for international engagements. This novel research has a high impact across the government, operates at a fast pace, and addresses some of the most critical national and economic security issues, placing us at the forefront of government policy. Role 1: Senior Assistant Economist - Market access and trade relations analysis
* Reporting to a Grade 7 Economist, the post holder would lead a portfolio of work for their respective HMTC regions and be key relationship manager for these HMTC overseas regions.
* This is a stretching role where the successful candidate will lead projects on the economic valuation of market access barriers, contribute in developing methodologies to value these barriers, support in monitoring and evaluation of resolved barriers and lead specific analytical project to develop evidence base.
* The post holder will provide analytical advice to policy team and Posts on MA related issues and support the Monitoring & Evaluation team to demonstrate impact on DBT work on market access and trade relations.
* You will produce fast, targeted analysis in a period of structural changes for the UK’s international trade and investment.
* You’ll help to identify and adapt new ways of working, shifting priorities across your portfolio as required, to support areas of Ministerial and Permanent Secretary interest, ensuring team’s welfare is maintained.
* The post holder will build relationships be working closely with relevant policy team as well as with analysts from across DBT and other government departments.
* There will be an opportunity for an international travel to build relationships with the regional teams at the UK overseas posts.
Role 2: Senior Assistant Economist – Critical Supply Chain Analysis
Reporting directly to the Grade 7 Head of Critical Supply Chain Analysis, the team's day-to-day activities include, but are not limited to:
* Developing bespoke data-driven analytical frameworks for identifying and assessing supply chain vulnerabilities and criticality.
* Providing ad hoc rapid response and crisis vulnerability analysis for geopolitical shocks and disruptions.
* Producing country and sector deep dives and reports to support DBT’s international network and policy colleagues.
* Working with internal, external, and international stakeholders to map and assess supply chains. This includes participating in international economic security dialogues and providing wider analytical support for international engagements.
* Undertaking novel research to address evidence gaps and inform the Directorate’s supply chain strategy and policy.
* Disseminating analysis across the Directorate and wider Government to enhance HMG’s understanding of supply chains. This includes presenting the analysis at various forums and steering groups, and to non-technical audiences.
* Developing technical and coding skills in various languages, including R, Python, SQL, and QuickSight, to process big data. This involves building engaging visualizations, dashboards, and automated reports to disseminate large, complex volumes of data and analysis in an intuitive way that is accessible to non-analysts.
