The Osteoporosis Nurse Specialist, in partnership with the lead clinicians, is responsible for the optimization of osteoporosis management services. The Osteoporosis Nurse Specialist has the lead role in conducting research and audit within the department, in conjunction with the Matron setting clinical standards within osteoporosis nursing across the Trust and local area using evidence-based practice. They will work independently receiving direct referrals from primary and secondary practice and advise on relevant treatments for patients with osteoporosis. They will interpret results and act on them in providing advice and treatment to patients.
Main duties of the job
1. To ensure the provision of a high-quality comprehensive Osteoporosis service to both inpatients and outpatients within University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.
2. To ensure the most effective use of resources and manpower to achieve Rheumatology departmental and Trust objectives.
3. To support the planning and development of the service in accordance with the Trust's policies and procedures.
Job responsibilities
* Undertakes and provides specialist clinical leadership, assessment of patients' needs, implementation and evaluation of patients' care packages which are evidence-based.
* Utilising all available resources taking into consideration the lifestyle, gender, and cultural background and ensuring involvement with the patient and family.
* Takes direct referrals from primary and secondary care.
* Following patient assessment and assessment of Dexascan, recommends new and changes in treatment to GP and secondary care.
* Provides specialist advice to GPs and medical teams within the hospital regarding starting and changing treatments.

Qualifications
* Registered Nurse level 1
* Educated to diploma level
* Educated to degree level
* Degree level module in nurse prescribing
* Degree level module in physical assessment
* Osteoporosis module
Registration
* NMC
Non Clinical
* Understanding and recent experience of an acute hospital
* Understanding of NHS budgetary systems
* Experience in working in osteoporosis or rheumatology
