Academic Development Programme - new Assistant Professors will undertake a 5-year development programme, at the end of which they are expected to be promoted to Associate Professor. The programme consists of a variety of development opportunities and the time to reflect and develop.
Background
The Department of Marketing, part of the triple accredited Birmingham Business School at the University of Birmingham, seeks to appoint three Assistant Professors in Marketing (Research and Education). These roles form part of a wider investment into the School’s academic excellence and commitment to setting new global standards in responsible business, one future leader at a time.
The Department is one of the largest Marketing Departments in the U.K, comprising 47 world-leading researchers and educators in consumer and marketing disciplines across our Edgbaston and Dubai Campuses. We are seeking to appoint in any area of Marketing or Consumer Behaviour that is aligned to our three core strengths: Responsible and Critical Marketing, Consumer Culture and Consumer Science and Marketing Innovations.
The Department has a strong track record of high quality, impactful research published in the leading international journals. Successful applicants will contribute to a vibrant research culture, helping the Department to achieve its world-leading ambitions in the delivery of innovative and responsible marketing and consumer research. They will also contribute to the range of teaching and supervision needs of the department, delivering learning and teaching on new and established programmes including our new Distance Learning MSc in Strategic Marketing Practice and our forthcoming BSc in Marketing. They will also undertake leadership and citizenship activities in line with the strategic objectives of Department, School and College of Social Sciences.
Role Summary
As an Assistant Professor in Marketing (Research and Education focused), you will make a substantial contribution to the delivery of high-quality research in areas that complement the research strengths of the department (both in Birmingham and Dubai) (Consumer Science and Marketing Innovations, Consumer Culture and Responsible and Critical Marketing). We are interested in hearing from people with strengths that are complementary with any one of these areas. You will be an emerging or experienced independent researcher, with a strong interest in contributing to the field through an exceptional orientation towards innovative, original and significant research, curiosity-driven research ideas, with real world impact. You will be able to demonstrate an appetite for engagement with the main sources of external research funding to enable you to build a programme of focused research activity.
Through excellent teaching you will inspire students and be informed by discipline-based research and the management, development and delivery of teaching and assessment, whilst enhancing the student experience and employability. You will contribute to a range of education-related activities. Teaching is likely to include a contribution to: (a) the management, development and delivery of teaching and assessment at all levels; and (b) enhancement of the student experience and employability. You will be expected to advance teaching and learning practice in your modules within the department, take a role in leading curriculum development and play an important role in student academic and pastoral support.
We are specifically interested in people who can lead the development and delivery of teaching on our UG and MSc portfolios and are open to candidates with expertise in a range of teaching (and/or research) related areas at the cutting edge of the Marketing discipline.
You will supervise UG and MSc dissertations. Management and administration opportunities are likely to include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement widening participation, schools’ outreach, or similar activities at Department/School level or further within the University.
In addition, you will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, developing and maintaining mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students, and ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others carry out theirs. You will contribute to a range of research, teaching and administration. Main Duties
Education
Using a variety of methods in teaching and advising individuals and groups of undergraduates, postgraduates, or CPD students, including (as appropriate):
* teaching and examining courses at a range of levels;
* planning and reviewing your own teaching approaches and encouraging others to do the same;
* designing contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging curriculum content;
* working collaboratively with colleagues to design and deliver teaching, learning and assessment;
* using digital resources/environments effectively to support learning and assessment;
* developing programme proposals and making substantial contributions to the design of teaching programmes more widely;
* where appropriate, undertaking and developing the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining;
* developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods;
* developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement activities or similar on own specialism that enhances the student experience or employability and which benefits the College and University;
* devising and supervising projects, student dissertations and practical work.
Research
Planning and carrying out research, including (as appropriate):
* planning and publishing high quality research, including winning financial support;
* project managing research activities, and/or supervising other research staff;
* presenting findings in publications and conference proceedings;
* effectively supervising and mentoring PhD students or early Career Researchers;
* providing expert advice to staff and students within the discipline;
* participating in research-related enabling activities such as adding value to a cross disciplinary network;
* applying knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding;
* developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, and enterprise (including business engagement, public engagement) and similar activity that is of benefit to the College and the University, including ensuring that the impact of your activities is realised fully and the impact is documented.
Management/Administration
Contributing to Departmental/School administration, including:
* contributing to the administration/management of research and/or teaching across the Department/School;
* leading and managing a team to devise and implement a new and/or revised process (e.g. new programme or a recruitment drive);
* advising on personal development of colleagues and students;
* making a major contribution to some administrative activities within the University (e.g. appeals panels, working groups);
* managing enterprise, business development, and public engagement activities;
* developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach;
* actively manages equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable behaviour.

Person Specification
* Normally, a higher degree (usually PhD) relevant to Marketing or Consumer Research
* High quality research and teaching experience and scholarship within subject specialism

Research
* Design, conduct and disseminate high quality research that aligns with the priorities of the Marketing Department
