Senior Battery Engineer - Plymouth MI

What are we looking for?
This position is responsible for performing testing and evaluation on a variety of products to the provisions of client-provided or other national, international or industry-specific performance and durability standards or U.S., Canadian and other International product safety standards; writing reports; and communicating with clients.
What you'll do:
1. Evaluate a variety of battery product designs and their compliance to applicable battery safety and performance standards.
2. Under the guidance of a more senior engineer, conduct on-site evaluation of products to determine compliance with applicable standard(s). To do this, Engineer must:
o Read and determine applicability of national codes and standards (UL/IEC) clauses for the EUT (equipment under test) such as IEC 62133, UL1973 and others;
o Read and understand client-provided or otherwise published performance or product safety standards;
o Read and understand schematics and manufacturing instructions;
o Validate the project scope and sample applicability;
o Under scope of the project, identify and locate test instruments and equipment required for testing;
o Follow established test plan;
o Set up and operate EUT; perform and document simple repairs on EUT as needed;
o Conduct thorough construction review, or sample inspection as needed; document results;
o Perform testing of products in accordance with standards. Core tests include, but are not limited to: Battery Cycling (Charge/Discharge), Vibration, Temperature/Humidity soak or cycle, durability cycling, Voltage and Current measurement, dielectric, pressure, abnormal and fault condition simulation.
3. Set up and operate standard test equipment including, but not limited to: Battery Cyclers, Temperature/Humidity Chambers; Vibration Test Controllers; Programmable Power Supplies; PLC or other controllers; pneumatic, hydraulic or electric actuators; AC/DC power supplies and loads; oscilloscope; multi-meter; dielectric strength tester; ground continuity tester; digital multi-meter; surge generator; over-voltage tester; environmental condition chamber; and articulated probes. Use hand tools to build/calibrate test fixtures.
4. Following sample handling procedures, ensure that sample is logged into and out of the system. Move equipment as needed through the facility. Properly package sample for shipment.
5. Compile test results during construction review and testing. Compile data and product description and type final report using established report shell. Submit report to reviewer for final approval.
6. Communicate project status and test results to client, sales personnel, and management throughout testing. Provide ongoing support to clients as needed.
7. Within policy guidelines, identify, properly document, and recommend engineering judgments.
8. Perform other work as required.
Minimum Requirements & Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in engineering.
* 3+ years of demonstrated work experience with battery testing.
* Demonstrated experience in battery testing and battery testing equipment (i.e., Battery cyclers, electronic loads, power supplies, environmental chambers).
* Strong understanding of battery performance and safety standards such as UL 1973, IEC 62133, UN 38.3.
* Demonstrated experience with Automotive (SAE, OEM specific), or International performance and environmental simulation test standards, and/or U.S., Canadian, and other International product safety standards, i.e., ANSI, CSA, UL, EN, IEC.
* Knowledge of cell and battery performance and safety standards.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organization and time management skills and customer service skills.
* Must be self-motivated and able to work independently in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
* Prior project management experience is a plus.
* Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
* Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
* Ability to make technical decisions and engineering judgments independently within established parameters.
* Microsoft Office expertise.
* Ability to travel as business needs dictate.
Preferred Requirements & Qualifications:
* Knowledge of Cells, Batteries, and Electrical Energy Storage Systems.
* Strong understanding of battery performance and safety standards such as IEC 62638, 62619, and UL 1642, 2580 and 2271.
