We are currently assisting the University of Huddersfield with their recruitment of a Mechanical and Plumbing Services Operative for their Huddersfield town centre campus.

Duties will include, but are not limited to:
•To undertake the operation of planned and reactive maintenance to:
o Domestic, large commercial MTHW / LTHW, steam, atmospheric gas, pressure
jet gas, and oil-fired boiler plants
o Steam plant, associated equipment, and distribution systems
o MTHW / LTHW heating and distribution systems
o MTHW / LTHW tempered air, refrigerant /chilled water air handling plant and
ductwork systems
o Direct expansion and chilled water cooling and distribution systems
o Boosted, tanked, and potable cold-water systems from both the hydraulic
gradient and the universities natural resources.
o Calorifier and plate exchanger hot water systems.
• To undertake the operation of and planned maintenance of a water treatment regime to portable, hot, cold, MTHW / LTHW heating, and steam systems.
• To undertake the inspection, testing, repair, and recording of data to control systems.
• To upgrade plant and distribution systems in accordance with good practice
and the requirements of the various British Standards and codes of practice.
• To undertake the inspection, testing, and recording of data with specialist testing equipment to plant and systems in accordance with the relevant codes of practice.
• To undertake fault finding on plant, associated ancillaries, distribution, and control systems using specialist testing equipment.
• To undertake all planned and reactive maintenance in accordance with manufactures recommendations, relevant codes of practice, and energy efficiency best practice.
• To undertake installations in compliance with current water and Health and Safety Codes of Practice for the prevention and control of Legionellosis.
• To undertake waste and drainage installations in accordance with the building regulations.
• To undertake repairs both planned and reactive in accordance with Statutory Regulations.
• To undertake minor plumbing installations in accordance Statutory Regulations on
behalf of Directorate and Client departments.
• To undertake installation, cyclical maintenance, and repair to appliances up to 2MW in accordance with manufacturer’s requirements and current legislation.
• To provide written information on jobs undertaken in the form of collation sheets or
input electronically through a PDA/Table/Smart Phone.
• To prepare materials schedules for future work.
• To provide written information on compliance with water by-laws and Health and
Safety Codes of Practice for the prevention and control of Legionellosis.
• To provide written information for the upkeep of a record system in relation to the
control of Legionellosis.
• To provide written information and reports in compliance with the requirements of the Gas Safety Act and the National Accredited Certification Scheme in Gas Safety
(ACS).
• To ensure the safety and security of all property of the University.
• To participate in an ‘out of hours’ emergency call-out rota.
• To provide occasional supervision to an Apprentice.
• To work alongside contract labour and provide occasional supervision of same
Required Qualifications:
• City & Guilds Craft Certificate in either Mechanical Building Services, Pipe Fitting, or Plumbing OR an NVQ Level 3 Certificate in either Plumbing or Building Mechanical Services (HVAC).
• CCN1 (Domestic) certification in the National Accredited Gas Safety Scheme (ACS); with a requirement to undertake the following within the first 6 months: Domestic – CEN1, WAT1, WAT1; Commercial – COCN1, ICPN1, TPCP1A, CIGA1, CORT1, ICAE1.
• Current UK driving licence as there will be a requirement to drive University vehicles on a day-to-day basis and when on-call.
Required Skills/Knowledge:
• Substantial post qualification experience in Mechanical/Plumbing Services.
• Experience of Boiler controls & combustion, and unvented domestic hot water systems.
• Experience of working in a multi-site maintenance environment.
• Experience using digital and analogue combustion and other instrumentation.
• Experience of working with handheld tablets and desktop computers.
• An understanding of Mechanical water pumping systems.
• Knowledge of The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.
• Knowledge of the current Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 (England and Wales).
• Knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work regulations.
• Can work effectively in a team but be equally capable of working alone with minimum supervision.
• Computer literate.
• Self-motivated, responsive, with the ability to work to tight deadlines to meet the needs of the University.
Hours via Shift Pattern:
• Monday – Thursday: 06.00 -14.00 or 10.00 - 18.00
• Friday: 06.00 - 13.00 or 10.00 - 17.30
• Will be required to participate in an ‘out of hours’ emergency call-out rota
Salary & Benefits:
• Grade 6 (£31,666 - £38,342 per annum) plus 12.5% shift allowance. It is expected that salary will be offered at the bottom of this grade.
