This is a part-time post for 28 hours per week.
South Tyneside and Gateshead sexual health team has an exciting opportunity for a passionate and committed Healthcare Assistant. We are looking for a friendly and enthusiastic person with a flexible approach to provide support to the clinical team. This part-time role (28 hours) will be predominantly based within the community sexual health clinic at Gateshead Sexual Health Service in Trinity Square Health Centre, however, to meet service need, the post holder may also be required to work from Palmers Community Hospital in Jarrow and outreach clinical locations.
We are a friendly, community-based, multi-disciplinary team. We are committed to delivering high quality, integrated sexual health care for the local population; our service includes both contraceptive and genito-urinary medicine. The post holder must be able to maintain a sensitive and non-judgemental approach to support patients with their sexual health needs.
Main duties of the job
The sexual health service is part of the community directorate within South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust.
The successful candidate will be an experienced Healthcare Assistant who can demonstrate they have an interest in sexual health and a desire to develop the skills and knowledge required for the role:
1. Maintain and respect strict confidentiality standards for service users.
2. Maintain a sensitive and non-judgemental approach when working with service users.
3. The post holder will be required to work evening and weekend duties as part of a monthly roster.
4. The post holder will be required to travel between clinic locations and for meetings as necessary.
5. Able to work effectively as part of the wider sexual health team and demonstrate excellent communication skills.
Job responsibilities
To work as a member of the Sexual Health Service providing care for patients attending integrated/GUM and CASH settings.
To support and assist qualified nursing staff in the provision of skilled nursing care.
To ensure that the highest level of patient care is achieved at all times in the most effective manner.
To assist with the day-to-day care of patients.
Chaperone for and assist medical and nursing staff during procedures e.g. taking specimens and biopsy.
Perform venepuncture (unsupervised) at the request of medical and nursing staff and be able to interpret clinical requests accurately from the medical record.
To work with service users in a non-judgemental manner in order to promote health outcomes.
To comply with the Trust's vision, values and behavioural compact.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care or equivalent qualification.
* NVQ level 3 or working towards in Health and Social Care.
Physical Skills
* Ability to assist clients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy.
* Carriage of equipment necessary for role.
* Car driver with access to a car.
Skills and Knowledge
* Understanding and experience of delivering holistic care.
* Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.
* Good interpersonal skills and able to maintain confidentiality.
* Ability to organise and prioritise workload.
* Flexible, motivated and positive approach to career development.
* Works to agreed standards and within protocols under supervision.
* Willing to undertake further training to support role development.
* Skills in an acute or community health setting.
Experience
* Experience of working in an NHS nursing environment. Experience of performing diagnostic tests e.g. venepuncture and screening for chlamydia and gonorrhoea.
