Job Summary
The Sustainability Manager will play a key role in developing and driving the company’s sustainability strategy, working across projects to implement and monitor environmental standards and ensure compliance with sustainability goals. This individual will work closely with project teams, clients, and suppliers to embed sustainable practices throughout project planning and delivery, from initial design to final closeout.
Key Responsibilities
1. Sustainability Strategy and Leadership:
Lead the development and implementation of the company’s sustainability strategy and objectives.
Collaborate with internal teams to embed sustainable practices at each stage of the project lifecycle.
Establish and track sustainability performance targets, providing guidance and training to teams and subcontractors.
2. Project Sustainability Management:
Partner with project managers to integrate sustainable solutions, focusing on energy efficiency, waste reduction, and resource optimisation.
Conduct site assessments and audits to ensure environmental compliance and identify sustainability opportunities.
Work with design and procurement teams to promote the use of environmentally friendly materials and sustainable construction practices.
3. Compliance and Reporting:
Ensure compliance with relevant environmental regulations, sustainability certifications (e.g., BREEAM, LEED), and health and safety standards.
Track and report on sustainability metrics, including carbon emissions, waste management, and energy usage.
Prepare sustainability performance reports for leadership and client review, with recommendations for improvements.
4. Stakeholder Engagement and Communication:
Engage with clients, suppliers, and community stakeholders to reinforce the company’s sustainability commitments and promote community initiatives.
Facilitate sustainability workshops and training sessions, cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility across the company.
Represent the company at sustainability forums and events, sharing achievements and best practices within the industry.
5. Innovation and Continuous Improvement:
Research emerging sustainability trends and innovations, recommending new approaches and technologies that align with the company’s goals.
Promote continuous improvement, sharing best practices and lessons learned to enhance sustainability efforts across projects.
Key Skills and Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, or a related field.
2. At least 5 years of experience in sustainability management within the construction or engineering industry.
3. Solid understanding of UK environmental regulations, sustainability standards (e.g., BREEAM, LEED), and construction industry best practices.
4. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, lead cross-functional teams, and drive change.
5. Excellent communication and presentation skills, with a proven track record of engaging diverse stakeholders.
6. Proficiency in sustainability reporting and data analysis.
7. A passion for sustainability with a proactive, solutions-focused mindset.
