Exciting Opportunity - Design Manager (or Senior Design Coordinator Looking to Step Up)
A leading contractor is seeking a Design Manager to take the lead in managing and coordinating the design process on major construction projects in Birmingham. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Design Coordinator looking to step up or an established Design Manager seeking a new challenge.
As the Design Manager, you will oversee the design development of one to two projects concurrently, ensuring compliance with contract requirements, cost efficiency, and seamless coordination between stakeholders.
Project: £50m student accommodation high rise
Key Responsibilities:
1. Lead, mentor, and manage the design team, ensuring smooth coordination of the design process.
2. Work closely with the QS and PM/PD teams to develop procurement and IRS schedules for new projects.
3. Oversee the design transfer process from preconstruction to construction, ensuring continuity and clarity.
4. Ensure design compliance, buildability, and cost efficiency throughout the project lifecycle.
5. Develop and manage Design Responsibility Matrix templates and consultant appointments.
6. Chair and coordinate Design Team Meetings/Workshops, tracking actions and deadlines.
7. Manage document control using ACC (Autodesk Construction Cloud), ensuring compliance with naming protocols and approvals.
8. Oversee technical submittals, RFIs, and design change control processes.
9. Manage the Internal Monthly Design Management tracker, feeding into project updates.
10. Coordinate Planning Condition, Building Control, and Warranty Provider sign-offs.
11. Ensure BREEAM compliance by managing consultant input and documentation.
12. Support project completion with O&M and H&S file management.
Qualifications & Skills Required:
1. Degree or professional qualification in a construction-related discipline.
2. Proven experience managing design processes on construction projects.
3. Experience with document management systems (e.g., ACC).
4. Strong understanding of building regulations, planning, and compliance requirements.
5. Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills.
6. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant design management software.
