Civil Engineering Apprenticeship Level 6

Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 percent of time split between the office and home over a 4 week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

Approximately 5.5 years – 6 years
Things to consider
Although this apprenticeship will involve site placements, the majority of placements will be office based with site visits.
Entry requirements
You should already hold or be working towards a minimum of 2 GCSEs Grade 4 (C) and above including Maths and English Language (or equivalent) plus 3 A Levels at grades BBC (or equivalent) which must include Maths and preferably a Science in either Chemistry or Physics. You must hold the required entry requirements prior to starting the scheme.
Candidates with equivalent level 3 qualifications must hold or be on track to achieve one of the following:
1. BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma DDM in an Engineering subject area, with a minimum of merit in Mathematics and advanced Mathematics. (UCAS points: 128)
2. Access to Engineering qualifications with 15 Distinctions and 30 Merits including Maths and Physical Science credit
3. T-level (Merit or above) in Construction: Design, Surveying And Planning. (UCAS points: 120)
4. Building Services Engineering Technician level 3 apprenticeship DD (UCAS points: 96) alongside grade Pass or Distinction at EPA
You are not eligible for this scheme if you currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme.
Please note that you will be required to provide original certificates and/or predicted grades as proof for your eligibility checks.
You must be 18 years of age by September 2024.

Job overview
Our Engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of our transport system. Our asset stock is hugely varied, and includes thousands of bridges, hundreds of kilometres of roads and tunnels, hundreds of embankments and cuttings and a vast network of drainage. These assets are the essential foundation of the transport system that keeps the city moving, working and growing. Our civil engineers are also at the forefront of major transport system upgrades, including HS2, Crossrail 2 and the Bakerloo Line Extension.
The role of a Civil Engineering Apprentice is critical in supporting works to ensure the ongoing reliability and safety of London’s world class transport infrastructure.

What will I be doing?
As an apprentice, your 5.5 – 6-year development programme will consist of 3 to 6 month placement rotations. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:
Year 1
Placement 1 - Sponsorship - 6 months:
1. Preparing project briefs and securing funding for projects
2. Prioritising project work banks
3. Undertaking financial impact assessments and equality impact assessments
Placement 2 - Project Management - 6 months:
1. Assisting with the Project Manager to deliver a range of projects
2. Understanding the commercial frameworks of the contract
3. Managing internal and external stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered to time and budget
Year 2
Placement 1 – Sustainability & Environmental Team - 6 months:
1. Assisting teams to improve on their sustainability and environmental impacts.
2. Working with internal and external stakeholders to align with the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.
Placement 2 - Civil Asset Operations (Maintenance Team) - 6 months:
1. Preparing project briefs and supervising contractors on essential civil maintenance works.
2. Inspection of bridges and structures, earth structures and pumps & drainage assets.
Apprentices have the option to undertake technical placements in the following teams to align with their interests:
These placements are likely to be undertaken after year 2 to align with the technical modules that would be taught at university.
What Qualifications will I gain?
Successful apprentices will gain a BEng civil engineering degree, which is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators. In addition, apprentices will be working towards Incorporated Engineering status (IEng) and Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE).
Where can this career take me?
Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off into one of the following roles: Engineering Technician, Assistant Engineer, Works Inspector, Assistant Project Manager, and Assistant Operations Officer which could lead to further career development opportunities in our engineering, operations and project delivery teams.
What training and support will you get?
You will be working towards a level 6 qualification in Civil Engineering. Typically, you will be required to attend University 1 day per week.
Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements. We’ll also support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, mentoring opportunities and structured networking opportunities. You will receive one-to-one support throughout the programme from a dedicated Mentor, your scheme sponsor and your Line Manager. You’ll also be connected to a ‘buddy’ who will be a more experienced apprentice from the scheme.

Assessment Process
You will receive support and information around each assessment stage as you progress through your application.
Please pay close attention to emails and deadlines provided noting you have 1 week to complete assessments and we cannot re-issue these tests.
Assessment centres for apprenticeship roles will take place from February-April, please note that many roles only have 1 assessment day and we are unable to guarantee additional dates. We are conducting assessment centres in person and virtually (role dependent).
