We are looking for an exceptional, forward-thinking lawyer and privacy & AI professional to join us as Director, Legal - Privacy & AI. Reporting to our VP of Legal & Privacy / Global DPO, you will be part of Trustpilots broader Trust leadership team, and help provide the strategic vision that ensures we deliver a best-in-class approach to Privacy & AI compliance globally. Youll also be rolling your sleeves up and working with your team to support the business to solve the broad range of complex, challenging, and often ambiguous problems that arise day-to-day at the cutting edge of trust online.
What youll be doing:
Leadership & Strategy
1. Be accountable for the delivery of a best-in-class approach to Privacy & AI compliance that enhances our Trust credentials without compromising commercial success.
2. Help set strategic direction and embrace the use of AI and other innovative technologies to maximise scalability and quality.
3. Lead our approach to partnering with key business functions to effectively operationalise Privacy & AI policies.
4. Manage, mentor, and develop a team of three privacy professionals and provide leadership across our broader Trust function.
5. Report to leadership on key Privacy & AI KPIs, governance risks, developments, and compliance initiatives.
Privacy & AI Compliance
1. Manage our Privacy & AI governance programs, ensuring our services and data processing activities align with key compliance requirements globally, focusing on EU and emerging US and international laws.
2. Shape and lead effective implementation of privacy-by-design, data governance, and accountability strategies, including the use of DPIAs, LIAs, ROPA, vendor diligence, and cookie and marketing consent management.
3. Lead on high-impact, high-risk privacy incidents, and projects, such as data breaches or regulatory complaints and investigations, and on reporting to the Board and related committees on matters of Privacy & AI compliance.
4. Partner with technical teams to evaluate AI models for fairness, transparency, and accountability.
5. Monitor existing laws and ensure our Privacy & AI compliance programs remain fit for purpose and in line with changing regulatory and customer expectations.
6. Evaluate proposed new data-related legislation and support our Public Affairs team to understand and influence laws in a way that best advances Trustpilots mission to be a universal symbol of trust.
7. Help operationalise privacy and introduce automated, scalable solutions to improve the management of privacy tickets, data records, PIAs, and other privacy projects and processes.
Business partnering & support
1. Lead Privacy & AI support to the business in significant commercial transactions and strategic partnerships, including drafting and negotiating privacy provisions and due diligence in a range of contracts and M&A scenarios.
2. Drive high-profile and high-impact multi-jurisdictional data-related initiatives across the business, supporting and advising key stakeholders and making pragmatic risk-based decisions.
3. Provide training and guidance to internal teams on privacy, AI governance, and data protection best practices.
4. Engage with leadership and stakeholders to drive privacy and AI governance awareness and adherence.
Who you are:
1. 10+ years PQE gained at least partly in-house and with experience in a fast-growing, multi-jurisdictional business, ideally in the tech sector.
2. Expertise in global privacy & AI regulations (GDPR, EU AI Act & emerging US law equivalents in particular) and passionate and knowledgeable about the legal and trust implications of Privacy and AI in equal measure.
3. Experienced leader and strategic thinker with a passion for rolling your sleeves up and making things happen.
4. A technical expert who prides yourself on your ability to give practical, business-oriented advice.
5. Experience operationalizing privacy, using privacy management tools, and reporting on key privacy metrics.
6. Team player with a fun, positive disposition.
Desirable features:
1. CIPP or other privacy-specific qualifications.
2. Experience operating in a 2-sided marketplace.
3. Experience in start-up/scale-up/listed environments.
4. Experience in a consumer-focused business or industry.
5. Experience working in a global or multinational environment.
6. Project management experience.
7. Additional European language beyond English.
