Assistant Director STEM Diversity and Inclusion (Gender)
In this exciting role, you will help us build the future Defence Science & Technology (S&T) workforce and support the Chief Defence Scientist to achieve greater diversity and inclusion in Defence S&T.
The role shapes and drives the development of strategic frameworks and programs to build a strong Defence S&T talent pipeline which is diverse in background and experience. The role will embed and integrate inclusion objectives in wider workforce strategies, programs, processes and systems across Defence Science and Technology Group and work with others to influence change across Defence and the Innovation, Science and Technology eco-system.
You will engage with a broad set of stakeholders to promote inclusion across the S&T enterprise, develop solutions that are fit for purpose and deeply aligned to our strategy to drive capability through inclusion, with a specific focus on Women in STEM. You will work closely with the Assistant Director for Indigenous STEM Engagement to ensure an intersectional approach to initiatives.
You will conduct research and project work to develop and implement relevant inclusion engagement programs that will provide pathways into Defence S&T and analyse workforce trends to inform decision making that will ensure provision of S&T to support the Australian Defence Force. You will deliver outstanding presentations to drive data-driven insights and key messaging to varying audiences.
Working in partnership with others, you will be responsible for developing frameworks, strategies and solutions to:
* Support the Defence Science & Technology Inclusion Steering Group to deliver on key inclusion activities and ensure decisions have an intersectional lens.
* Implement, evaluate and report on the Science in Australia Gender Equity Bronze Action Plan, and develop the Silver Action Plan.
* Establish enterprise-level governance and reporting and oversee working groups and committees.
* Develop effective partnerships with industry and academia to strengthen strategic entry pathways for identified diversity groups into Defence Science & Technology.
* Support senior executives to deliver on outcomes and actions from groups such as the STEM Champions of Change Coalition and Science in Australia Gender Equity.
* Establish and maintain robust relationships with key stakeholders in order to promote Defence as an employer of choice for Women in STEM.
* Identify risks, trends and opportunities that may influence the future direction and report against key inclusion and diversity metrics.
You will be exceptional at building long-term, collaborative relationships with stakeholders at all levels (including other areas of Defence, Publically Funded Research Agencies, Academia and Industry) and know how to link inclusion into the strategic workforce management strategies. Strong written and verbal communication skills and excellent analytical skills with the ability to develop high quality senior stakeholder material in short time frames will be essential.
This role would be suited to people who understand diversity in STEM and may be looking to broaden their skills and work across the Defence S&T ecosystem. Tertiary qualifications in an appropriate discipline or demonstrated relevant, equivalent professional experience and an understanding of the STEM ecosystem across Australia would be well regarded.
About our Team
The Workforce Capability and Talent (WCT) team within the Research Technology and Operations Division is responsible for building Defence capability through the strategic management of the Defence S&T workforce. WCT ensures there is a strong, diverse pipeline to meet the future workforce demand for Defence Science and Technology Group through planning workforce capability, partnering to raise the profile of STEM, engaging with talent pools and developing sustainable talent management strategies.
Our team consists of six key functions including Culture Transformation, Entry Workforce (which includes entry-level programs), STEM Outreach and Engagement, Diversity and Inclusion, Future Workforce Planning and Current Workforce (which includes learning and development and key workforce programs).
We also lead the critical ‘People’ foundation of the Defence Innovation Science and Technology Strategy ‘Accelerating Asymmetric Advantage; Delivering More, Together’ which focusses on developing a highly skilled and collaborative workforce which values diversity and builds a shared culture.
The WCT team is relatively small, but highly agile, and team members often work across teams to assist in key projects at peak times, including assisting in key STEM based events.

You will have success in developing and implementing evidence-based frameworks, programs and/or initiatives to support inclusion outcomes in an S&T environment, and a demonstrated understanding of issues and trends relating to equity and inclusion.
You will have the ability to influence and build strong relationships to work seamlessly across Defence and more broadly and bring a great track record of thinking strategically, bringing new ideas and implementing these at pace and scale. You will thrive on solving problems and inspiring others to deliver great outcomes.
