Position: District Manager (DM)
Waste Connections of Canada, the leader in non-hazardous solid waste management in North America, is looking for a District Manager (DM) to lead the operations at our facility in Peterborough, ON.
The Peterborough District operation services the needs of our commercial, residential, and industrial customers in the Peterborough and the Kawarthas Area. The DM will support and lead the direct reports who collectively oversee a team of approximately 50 operational employees. The operation is comprised of a hauling operation with approximately 40 routes, a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), and a Transfer Station.
We are looking for a safety-inclined, energetic, autonomous, and proactive Servant Leader capable of making and creating change through our core values.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement procedures and systems for employees to operate in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner.
2. Full P&L responsibility.
3. Develop strategic operations plan with longer-term facilities/capital needs to support growth strategies.
4. Develop annual business plan and budget targets.
5. Adjust and monitor staffing requirements and costs adjustments to meet customer service expectations and productivity targets.
6. Approve and monitor safety initiatives and incentives to meet targets.
7. Negotiate or guide negotiations of disposal and transportation (to landfill) costs and third-party transfer station arrangements to optimize tons to landfills.
8. Monitor carryovers and customer-initiated feedback to optimize customer service levels.
9. Approve and monitor sales plans, including territory planning, productivity metrics, sales tracking, and sales structure.
10. Review new/lost business, service increases/decreases, and impact on margin and volume with sales manager.
11. Implement organizational structure and succession plans designed to meet business plan and people development objectives.
12. Provide training, coaching, goal setting, and reviews of direct reports to optimize performance.
13. Review and approve District Controllers monthly forecasts and other reports required by corporate office.
14. Identify strategic acquisition candidates and negotiate transactions.
15. Ensure appropriate plans are in place to facilitate integration and to meet pro-forma targets.
16. Identify potential business partners, e.g., third-party transfer stations, and negotiate partnership/joint venture agreements to assist in meeting plan goals.
17. Participate in industry conferences, associations, and other networking venues as appropriate.
18. Develop relationships and liaise with key partners in municipal government e.g., mayor, waste division. Understand landscape, deal with emerging issues, and address environmental and waste concerns.
19. Oversee personnel needs of the District including selecting, coaching, training employees, and evaluating employee performance.
Qualifications:
1. Minimum 10 years’ experience in a senior operations management and/or sales management role.
2. Prior transportation/logistics experience is an asset.
3. Post-secondary degree, preferably in business/commerce.
4. Excellent planning, strategy, and analytical skills.
5. Highly developed leadership and entrepreneurial skills.
6. Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
7. Proven track record in meeting business plan objectives.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
1. Work performed in an office and field environment; includes walking regularly throughout the workday.
2. Frequent use of the telephone and computers in performing the job duties.
3. Occasional travel by airplane and automobile in conducting business is necessary.
