Interim Head of Governance and Compliance

About the Role
We are seeking an Interim Head of Governance & Compliance to play a pivotal role in shaping governance, compliance, and risk management at Zero Waste Scotland. This is a strategic leadership position, ensuring that our transition to an Executive NDPB is smooth, compliant, and aligned with best practices.
As a key member of the Finance & Corporate Services, Transition & Transformation Programme, and Leadership Teams, you will lead on embedding governance frameworks, compliance processes, and risk management policies while supporting the Board of Directors, Chief Executive, and Executive Leadership Team.
Key Responsibilities
* Governance & Risk Management – Oversee risk frameworks, governance structures, and compliance policies, ensuring the organisation operates effectively within a public sector environment.
* Strategic Leadership – Provide expert advice to senior leaders, contribute to Board meetings, and develop strong relationships with stakeholders and funders.
* Regulatory Compliance – Ensure adherence to GDPR, FOISA, EIR, PRSA, and other statutory obligations while serving as the organisation’s Data Protection Officer and Records Manager.
* Operational Excellence – Implement new governance and compliance systems, ensuring a seamless transition to Executive NDPB status.
* Team Development – Lead and mentor the Governance & Compliance team, fostering a high-performance culture.
Qualifications
* Degree or professional qualification in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience.
* Strong background in governance, compliance, and risk management.
* Experience leading change, developing systems, and embedding new processes.
* Ability to interpret complex regulatory frameworks and provide expert guidance.
* Exceptional communication, leadership, and analytical skills.
* Public sector governance and compliance experience.
* Knowledge of resource efficiency, recycling, or environmental issues.
* Experience working with a Board of Directors.
