Job overview
A Band 3 senior phlebotomist is an integral part in the leadership of a large phlebotomy team. The team provides a phlebotomy service across acute wards at Wythenshawe Hospital, Out patient departments at Wythenshawe and Withington Community Hospitals and the surrounding community GP's. Responsibilities include leading the delivery of the Phlebotomy ward service at weekends and Bank Holidays and in the absence of the Phlebotomy Manager or Supervisor.
Main duties of the job
1. Undertake venepuncture procedures effectively and sensitively, with respect for the patient’s welfare, dignity, and preferences.
2. Participate in staff development, induction, and venepuncture training and assessment of staff.
3. Maintain high standards of clinical practice in accordance with phlebotomy competencies and be a role model to Band 2 staff.
4. Undertake near patient testing and reagent calibration checks via capillary sampling for INR.
5. Travel to GP Practices and Health Centres using own vehicle.
6. Carry out continuous performance assessments of Band 2 Phlebotomy staff and advise the Phlebotomy Supervisor/Manager of any capability or performance issues.
7. Ensure delivery of the Phlebotomy ward service at weekends and Bank Holidays and in the absence of the Phlebotomy Manager or Supervisor.

Person specification
Education/Qualifications
* Maths & English, GCSE grade C or Key Skills level 2.
* NVQ Level 3 in Health or 5 years Phlebotomy experience in an acute setting.
* Care Certificate.
* Train the Trainer certificates.
Experience
* Phlebotomy experience in an acute health care setting.
* Capable to work unsupervised and have experience in leading a large team.
* Experience of training venepuncture to new/unskilled staff.
* Link Worker/Key train the trainer; Moving and Handling, ANTT.
Skills
* Ability to prioritise own tasks and organise duties within a team.
* Able to resolve problems, complaints, and issues of Patients and Team members.
* Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with patients, staff, and Team members.
* Experience in teaching electronic patient record systems (HIVE). Excellent knowledge in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
* Stock management, auditing, and ordering.
* Experience in liaising with all levels of service users.
