If you've got a knack for fast-paced food production, a keen eye for detail, and a love for all things food, then you might just be the perfect filling for our team Job Purpose The Production Shift Manager for the Hot Pie Department at Palethorpes Bakery is responsible for leading a team to ensure the safe, efficient, and high-quality production of hot pies. This role involves managing all aspects of production within the department during the 12-hour day shift, ensuring that production targets are met within defined cost parameters while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will have prior experience as a shift manager, preferably within a food manufacturing environment, and will possess strong leadership and team development skills. Key Responsibilities Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE): Actively promote a culture of safety, health, and environmental awareness in line with the company's H&S policy. Ensure compliance with SHE plans and safety KPIs. Lead accident investigations and manage corrective actions. Maintain compliance with all relevant safety and environmental regulations. Quality and Food Safety: Foster a strong quality and food safety culture within the department. Ensure compliance with the Quality Management System (QMS) and customer/legislative requirements. Oversee the management of product quality, including SPC control, complaint handling, and traceability. Ensure adherence to GMP, hygiene standards, and Critical Control Points (CCPs). Production Efficiency: Manage production operations to achieve daily and weekly targets, ensuring adherence to financial controls. Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs), including plan attainment, material and labor variance, and downtime. Ensure compliance with production control systems and processes. Team Leadership and Development: Lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing team to achieve business objectives. Manage performance through setting clear roles, responsibilities, and objectives. Conduct Performance Development Reviews (PDRs) and implement performance improvement plans as necessary. Facilitate training and development activities to build a sustainable skill base within the team, including induction and succession planning. Communication and Engagement: Ensure effective two-way communication with all team members, utilizing meetings, briefings, notice boards, and other communication tools. Maintain strong employee relations and gather feedback to improve engagement. Provide clear and concise handovers to the Night Shift Manager, ensuring seamless continuity of operations. Continuous Improvement: Drive and support continuous improvement initiatives within the Hot Pie department. Identify opportunities for process improvements and lead the implementation of changes. Regularly review and report on the progress of continuous improvement plans and their impact on KPIs. New Product Development (NPD): Manage the effective execution of NPD trials from start to finish, ensuring trials meet production, quality, and cost expectations. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze trial results and set production standards for new products. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Safety and SHE compliance metrics. Quality control and food safety adherence. Production efficiency and cost management. Team development and performance metrics. Communication effectiveness and employee engagement. Continuous improvement outcomes and NPD trial success. Qualifications And Experience Proven experience as a shift manager in a food manufacturing environment, with a strong understanding of production processes and food safety standards. Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop teams. Strong knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations. Experience in continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) is a plus. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work a 4 on 4 off shift pattern, including weekends and public holidays.
