This role will transfer to UHS Estates Ltd (UEL) from 1st April 2025. UEL is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. The job description, terms and benefits associated with the role will not change as a result of this transfer.
Main duties of the job
The Estates Maintenance Department is looking to recruit a maintenance assistant higher to join our dedicated team at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust. We operate across Southampton General Hospital and Princess Anne Hospital, which is a large static site. You will work with a team of Assistants and trades staff and assist in repairing and maintaining various systems throughout the hospital.
Key Responsibilities:
* Assisting band 2 maintenance assistants
* Plumbing and drainage
* Boilers/calorifiers
* Nurse call, portable equipment testing
* Ventilation
* Lamp/fluorescent tube replacement
* Minor building fabric repairs
* Decoration of small areas/rooms as they become available
* Hanging/rehanging of notice boards/whiteboards
* General maintenance related cleaning duties
* Providing backup for craftsmen/contractors
* Other specialist duties may also be required after appropriate training.
What we are looking for
* To be able to understand and clarify detailed instructions, interpret operational manuals, finding and demonstrate the best solutions.
* Analytical and judgement skills
* Manage own workload, prioritising work and response times
* Work independently, without direct supervision or as part of a team and where appropriate, identify any deficiencies and report them to the appropriate team leader so there is minimum disruption whilst carrying out work.
* Demonstrate own activities to less experienced or new employees and support the induction of new starters.
* Take responsibility for the collection of materials and consumables from suppliers, as required.
* To work safely with tools ensuring a controlled working area, in accordance with Health & Safety Regulations, and site-specific protocols.
* To have a good understanding of all aspects of fire safety.
* Participate in extended hours activity via rostered overtime.
Person Specification
Previous or relevant experience necessary
Essential
* Relevant and recent experience in a similar maintenance organisation.
* Working at Heights & Manual handling
* Demonstrable experience and knowledge of identifying faults and assisting in repairs.
Desirable
* Experience in minor repairs to mechanical & electrical building installations.
* Experience of carrying out routine surveys & audits.
* Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary Estates & Facilities team in a healthcare environment.
Qualifications
Essential
* Knowledge & experience in engineering practices; base level of theoretical knowledge.
* Knowledge & relevant experience in plumbing, electrical & building repairs.
* NVQ 3, City and Guilds or equivalent experience in performing engineering operations.
* Full and clean driving licence.
Desirable
* CSCS, PASMA, IPAF.
