NHUC is a not-for-profit, Community Benefit Society, delivering care across Frimley and Hampshire and Isle of Wight ICBs.
This role is ideal for someone with experience and background in urgent care looking for their next career move. The Head of Service will report directly to the Director of Operations and the executive team. Job Purpose
To take full responsibility of the day-to-day operations and future growth of NHUC's UTCs, working with a high level of autonomy as a Senior Leader reporting directly to the Executive team.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Professional
1. To rapidly establish and maintain excellent working relationships with the leadership and operational teams of our contract holders (HHFT and FHFT).
2. To establish effective working relations with all members of the multidisciplinary team to promote good communication and a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
3. Ensure UTC policies and procedures are up-to-date and that all staff comply with agreed policies and maintain best practice.
4. Participate in the investigation of accidents, incidents and complaints; implement corrective action where necessary in consultation with the governance team.
5. To manage conflict promptly and effectively, supporting and promoting effective working relationships within the multidisciplinary team and initiating and evaluating any action plans.
6. Ensure the maintenance of a safe working environment and that all areas have a named Health and Safety representative.
7. To ensure that COSHH and Infection Control policies are implemented and that every effort is made to identify and minimise potential risks/hazards.
8. Implement audit and benchmarking processes, quality road maps, and make improvements as required.
9. To be responsible for undertaking risk assessments in line with NHUC's Risk Management Policy.
10. To be responsible for the implementation of safe working practices as required by Health and Safety at Work Act and ensure the staff in UTC are maintaining accurate and contemporaneous training records.
Operational Management
1. To be responsible for the day-to-day effective and efficient management of UTC staff, support staff and equipment within the department.
2. To continually assess and model skill mix and patient demographics to ensure capacity is optimized.
3. To manage all income and expenditure for the UTCs, assess the financial position on an ongoing basis and work with the finance team on preparation of budgets and forecasts.
4. Direct and manage all aspects of the department on a daily basis to ensure smooth and safe running.
5. Lead and support systems of induction, staff appraisals and management to allow for appropriate developmental activities.
6. Act as the central point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders.
7. Attend regular group meetings external to UTC as required to ensure the UTC has appropriate representation.
8. Responsible in conjunction with the Clinical resource team in ensuring rotas, annual leave and the use of flexible staff are based on the needs and funding envelope of the service.
9. Responsible for ensuring all line management activities are completed and followed for operational staff which includes but is not limited to absence, annual leave, and appraisals.
10. To be responsible for ensuring confidentiality and safekeeping of patient records, in accordance with NHUC IG policies and procedures.
11. To ensure that there is effective communication in place to allow staff to keep abreast of developments within the organisation by encouraging use of NHUC Connect.
12. Lead the recruitment and selection of staff in consultation with the Clinical Lead and HR.
13. Participate as an active member of the on-call rota.
General
1. Ensure key performance indicators are meeting local and national standards, investigate any areas indicating improvement requirements.
2. Ensure internal and external reporting requirements are met.
3. To proactively horizon scan for potential business opportunities within the UTC or related areas and submit business cases to push these potential opportunities forwards.
4. To innovatively review business on an ongoing basis to improve patient experience and cost-effectiveness.
5. Undertake mandatory and statutory training as per NHUC requirements and ensure the team undertakes the same.
6. Utilise opportunities to develop skills and knowledge further, learn from others, and keep up-to-date with current practice in this field.
7. Provide coaching and development to other members of the team.
8. Demonstrate use of excellent communication skills to support patients and their families in highly stressful situations and to ensure staff are supported to develop these skills.
9. To undertake any other duties required.
10. The post holder may be required to work at any of the NHUC sites in line with the service needs.
11. The post holder must at all times carry out responsibilities with due regard to NHUC's Equality & Diversity Policy.
12. To be flexible in the approach to working times; there may be a requirement to work unsocial hours to meet the needs of the business.
13. Represent NHUC in all matters in relation to the UTC with system partners including, but not limited to ICBs and Urgent and Emergency Care partners.
14. Work in partnership with system stakeholders to develop the service.
15. Ability to deputise where required for the Director of Operations Same Day Care.
16. Be an active member of NHUC's Executive committees, being wholly responsible for the UTC and contributing to the ongoing organisational strategy.
17. Be an ambassador for NHUC's values and behaviours.

Person Specification
Qualifications
1. Educated to degree level.
2. Clinical background or MBA.
3. Good financial understanding and ability to handle budgets.
4. Ability to manage time and workload methodically and effectively.
5. Excellent attention to detail.
6. Strong computer literacy (particularly Excel & Word).
7. Process driven.
8. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
9. Excellent liaison and negotiation skills.
10. Self-motivated and able to work independently and autonomously.
11. High standard of written and verbal communication skills to communicate clearly and effectively with staff and external agencies.
12. Ability to work under pressure and manage own personal stress.
13. Ability to work as an effective team member and form good working relationships, internally and externally.
14. Able to handle conflict respecting others' values and opinions.
Experience
1. Proven track record of service delivery, ideally in a UTC setting.
2. Proven track record of people management.
