The Team:
The Med Mal underwriting team is based across our York, London, and Colchester offices. The team is responsible for driving profitable growth across Hiscox UK in the Allied Healthcare sector. They work closely with regional development underwriting teams to ensure seamless service to brokers, leveraging relationships to support growth, including cross-sell and up-sell.
The Role:
This role offers an exciting opportunity to join our specialist Med Mal underwriting team, playing a pivotal role in expanding our medical malpractice book. You will join a friendly team with diverse underwriting backgrounds and have the chance to develop your knowledge into new areas. Reporting to the Head of Medical Malpractice, this role involves UK travel and requires a commitment to work hard, developing large new opportunities within our broker panel, as well as renewing and servicing existing accounts.
Key responsibilities:
* Underwrite consistently and profitably
* Develop close, effective relationships with brokers
* Negotiate effectively with internal and external parties, including brokers
* Maintain and develop customer relations
* Visit broker partners and write their business
* Identify and challenge non-standard underwriting decisions within the Technical Underwriting Guide (TUG), referring to an underwriting manager when necessary
* Identify non-performing broker accounts and take remedial steps to improve profitability
Key requirements:
* Minimum of five years relevant Medical Malpractice underwriting or broking experience
* ACII qualification or progress towards it
* Drive, self-motivation, and determination to achieve results
* Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven track record in relationship management and customer focus
* Ability to make logical decisions in complex situations using available facts
* Strong influencing and negotiation skills
* Team player, outgoing, and confident
* Ability to challenge the status quo
* Behaviors aligned with achieving personal and team objectives, in line with Hiscox's core values
* Degree qualification preferred, with a minimum of 2 A levels at grade C or above (not mandatory for experienced underwriters)
