PhD Researcher at University of Leicester : The College of Science and Engineering at the University of Leicester is offering a fully funded 3.5-year PhD scholarship for the research project “Advanced Microstructure Characterisation of Fusion Structural Materials Subject to Simultaneous Creep and Irradiation.” This exciting opportunity aims to address the materials challenge in engineering assurance for the UK Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) through advanced microstructure characterization and modeling.
Advanced Microstructure Characterisation of Fusion Structural Materials Subject to Simultaneous Creep and Irradiation
Designation : PhD Researcher
Research Area : Advanced Microstructure Characterisation of Fusion Structural Materials Subject to Simultaneous Creep and Irradiation
Location : University of Leicester, School of Engineering
Eligibility/Qualification : Prospective candidates should hold a master’s degree in a relevant field of engineering or materials science. A strong background in materials characterization, finite element modeling, and/or deep learning-based convolutional neural networks is desirable. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, are essential.
Job Description : The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Yang Liu, Professor Simon Gill, and Professor Bo Chen to investigate the deformation and fracture mechanisms of CuCrZr alloy and reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic (RAFM) steel subject to simultaneous creep and proton irradiation. The role involves the performance of 3D correlative microscopy studies using the UK’s first-of-its-kind characterisation facility, creation of a microstructure-related material database, calibration of CPFEM models, and the utilization of deep learning-based convolutional neural networks for image analysis. Financial support for attendance at international meetings/workshops is also available.
How to Apply : Interested candidates should apply for the Engineering PhD program via the University of Leicester’s online application system, ensuring to specify their interest in the “Advanced Microstructure Characterisation of Fusion Structural Materials Subject to Simultaneous Creep and Irradiation” project.
Last Date for Apply : The application deadline is October 3, 2024, with the start date for the successful candidate being January 6, 2025, or soon after.
