Teacher of Classics
Permanent; Full time
Commencing: September 2025
Closing date: 24 February 2025 at 12 noon
An opportunity has arisen to join an outstanding Classics department at Haileybury.
In the classical languages, we aim both to improve fluency in reading the language (as a language, rather than just a code) and accuracy of translation, for which a precise and rigorous understanding of grammar is necessary.
Latin is taught from Lower School 1 and continues for all students throughout Key Stage 3. In Removes the topics focus on Roman identity and values, Roman women and Roman views of other peoples. The aim of the course is to provide the skills and knowledge necessary for success in Latin, Greek or Classical Civilisation at GCSE and A level/IB, but also to offer all students a valuable and developmental interaction with the ancient world.
In Key Stage 4, Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation are all offered at GCSE. While at Key Stage 5, we offer Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation at A level and both Latin and Greek for the International Baccalaureate.
Classrooms are innovative learning spaces, equipped with iPads, MacBooks and Apple TVs, as well as white boards and other teaching resources.
The successful applicant will be educated to a degree level with a relevant subject and will have experience of teaching at GCSE and A level; IB teaching is desirable but not essential. An ability to teach Classical Civilisation to GCSE level would also be advantageous but not essential. They will have an interest in fostering lifelong learning in our pupils and the ability to stretch pupils beyond the curriculum.
Please see the candidate brief for more information.
