About the Role
Connex Education is looking for a dedicated and resilient SEND Teaching Assistant to support students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in a specialist school in Barking.
This role involves working closely with pupils who may display challenging behaviours, providing both academic and emotional support. You will assist in delivering tailored interventions, supporting students on a 1:1 basis and in small groups to help them develop positive coping strategies and achieve their full potential.
This is a full-time, long-term role with the potential for permanent opportunities for the right candidate.

The school is a specialist provision that caters for students with SEMH needs, as well as associated learning difficulties such as ADHD, autism, and trauma-related behaviours. The school offers a structured and nurturing environment where students receive personalised learning and therapeutic support.
Staff work closely with therapists, external agencies, and families to create a holistic support system that helps students re-engage with education, develop confidence, and improve their emotional well-being.
Assignment Details
* Start Date: April 2025
* Contract Type: Full-time, long-term
* Working Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm (term-time only)
* Pay Rate: 450-525 per week
Person Specification
We are looking for a SEND Teaching Assistant (SEMH Support) who meets the following criteria:
* Experience working with young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour
* A calm, patient, and resilient approach when working with students who may display emotional distress
* Ability to build positive relationships and establish trust with students
* Understanding of behaviour management strategies, de-escalation techniques, and emotional regulation methods
* A team player who can work alongside teachers, therapists, and other professionals
* DBS Check: A valid DBS on the update service or willingness to provide a new one
Desirable Criteria
* Experience in a PRU (Pupil Referral Unit), alternative provision, or specialist SEMH setting
* Training in Team Teach, MAPA, or de-escalation strategies (or willingness to complete training)
* Understanding of trauma-informed approaches and restorative practices
* A background in youth work, mentoring, or mental health support
