Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
This is a NHS locum full-time post for 1 year to strengthen the existing complement of full time Consultants Physicians in Respiratory Medicine. The successful candidate will work as part of a busy, dynamic chest team.
The post will involve a commitment to respiratory inpatient care, bronchoscopic and pleural lists and respiratory outpatient care with an opportunity to develop a sub-speciality interest in one of sleep medicine, Interstitial Lung disease or community respiratory care.
Main duties of the job
Sessions will be provided for patient-related administration and supporting patient activities. Successful applicants will be encouraged to develop a sub-speciality interest that complements the existing team.
Currently the Respiratory Physicians participate in a respiratory on call rota (currently 1:9 weekdays and 1:10 weekends). Upon appointment of a new colleague via this post the rota would become 1:10 weekdays and 1:11 weekends.
Job responsibilities
The contract assumes 10.25 sessions of professional activity amounting to 8.25 PAs allocated as direct patient care and 2 PAs to supporting professional activities. This would include teaching and training of junior doctors, CPD, audit and governance. There are regular good practice meetings replacing routine clinical work which has been factored into the allowance. In practice this amounts to 0.5 PA a week and the expectation, therefore, is that the routine week will consist of 8 PAs allocated to direct patient care and 2.0 PA for supporting professional activity.
On call duties involve daytime ward rounds of the respiratory ward. Consultants are expected to take phone calls during the day and evenings, which would attract a 3% uplift. Consultants are very rarely called back to the Trust but are expected to in case of emergencies. Weekend on call work involves daily ward rounds of the 2 respiratory ward areas with experienced ANP support.
Provision to the Trust with other medical colleagues of a service in Respiratory Medicine. There will be responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients with Respiratory as well as general medical illnesses.
The post holder will be responsible for respiratory and other medical referrals within the Trust and continuing care of patients who are not located on the respiratory ward.
