Overview The Senior Estimator is responsible for leading estimates for civil engineering projects, ensuring alignment with company estimating systems and procedures. This role involves working collaboratively within tender teams to develop customer solutions and secure projects that align with business objectives. Key Responsibilities: Review and assess tender documents, ensuring a clear understanding of requirements. Evaluate contract requirements at a high level. Prepare Bills of Quantities (BoQ) from tender documents and work with client-supplied BoQs. Issue sub-contractor enquiries, assess responses, and ensure compliance with contract and specification requirements. Identify and source material requirements for procurement during the tender process. Develop and manage resourcing and costing strategies for tenders. Lead and coordinate the tender process, including internal review meetings. Attend and present at mid-tender and post-tender client interviews and meetings. Ensure timely and compliant submission of tenders. Identify risks and opportunities within the tendering process. Adhere to all health, safety, and risk assessment requirements. Oversee the full tender process, including preparation, validation, adjudication, and final submission. Minimise subcontractor and material costs while collaborating with design, planning, commercial, and bid management teams. Estimate project costs to meet customer requirements, including obtaining and negotiating supplier quotes. Build and maintain relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, suppliers, and subcontractors. Contribute to developing tender win strategies alongside business unit teams. Requirements: Degree/HNC/HND in Construction or Civil Engineering. 7-10 years of experience in estimating within civil engineering. Strong knowledge of estimating from first principles. Understanding of current construction methods and production outputs. Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills. High attention to detail and organisational ability. Proficient in estimating software and Microsoft Office (especially Excel). Knowledge of popular forms of contract (NEC, ICC, JCT, etc.). Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under minimal supervision. Capable of multitasking, prioritising, and working under pressure to meet deadlines. Proactive, adaptable, and able to challenge constructively when needed. A strong team player, willing to share best practices while taking ownership of key decisions.
