Nottingham University Hospitals Pharmacy department has an exciting opportunity for a Medicines Management Assistant to join the Urgent and Emergency Care (UEC) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) pharmacy team working in one of the UK’s largest and busiest acute teaching hospital Trusts.
This post will involve working alongside our established pharmacy team, consisting of Pharmacists, Medicines Management Technicians and Medicines Management Assistants. We are aiming to improve and enhance our comprehensive pharmacy service that we already have within the UEC directorate.
The Medicines Management Assistant is a crucial component of the UEC pharmacy team and their contributions make a huge difference to patient care and this is recognised by the entire multidisciplinary team within the UEC directorate. Main duties of the job
To work as part of the UEC and SDEC Clinical Pharmacy Team in providing an efficient, effective and safe pharmaceutical service to patients and service users.
* Manage ward and patient drug stocks ensuring adequate stock is available in the clinical area by topping up stock, processing extra requests and proactively managing stock levels.
* Dispense urgent inpatient and discharge prescriptions for patients within the clinical area.
* Assist in the management of drug supply problems in the clinical area, moving stock within the trust to ensure availability.
* Play an active role in managing the automated medicines storage system (currently Omnicell) within the Emergency Department helping to ensure that cost-effectiveness, efficiency and safety are optimised.
* Monitor, report and audit defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to the ward-based medicines automation systems under the supervision of the Specialist Pharmacist responsible for the area.
* Assist in the delivery of training and competency assessment of Pharmacy and Clinical staff to ensure the correct usage and benefits are fully realised of the medicines automation systems.
* Assist in the development, monitoring and audit of the UEC clinical pharmacy service.
* Implement local improvements to deliver the Trustwide Medicines Optimisation strategy.
* Integrate into the wider multidisciplinary team in the clinical area.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Contribute to the provision of the drug and fluid replenishment service to the UEC clinical areas which include the Emergency Department and SDEC.
* Maintain and review drug supply issues relevant to the clinical area to ensure an effective and safe system of drug supply, through effective communication with relevant pharmacy and ward staff.
* Co-ordinate and process ad-hoc and urgent stock requests ensuring that stock levels are efficiently maintained.
* Ensure that all ward stock is put away in the correct place, keeping the cabinets and ward stock cupboards tidy and regularly stock checked.
* Maintain the medicines stock for the UEC areas, regularly completing defined audits of availability of drugs, reviewing and adjusting stock levels in liaison with the UEC pharmacists and ward managers to ensure adequate stock holdings and minimising wastage.
* Facilitate the rapid transfer of patients’ medications to and from the appropriate dispensary either by air tube or on foot, for those prescriptions that cannot be supplied locally.
* Collect and transfer patients’ medication between wards and departments.
* Facilitate the rapid supply of urgent stock controlled drugs to the ward, by transferring the order book to the controlled drug room and delivering dispensed supplies back to the ward in accordance with departmental procedures and standards.
* Assist the Medicines Management Technicians in collecting data to support audit and research, which includes transaction reports from the Omnicell and to investigate discrepancies. Monitor the local usage of drugs that are desirable/abusable and to highlight and investigate unexplained changes in usage patterns.
* Be responsible for the local implementation of standards relating to medicines storage and security including:
o Ambient and fridge temperature monitoring.
o Security of medicines storage in treatment rooms, drug trolleys, fridges, emergency trolleys and boxes, controlled drugs cupboards and where appropriate Omnicell cabinets.
* Represent the Pharmacy Department when working in ward, clinic or other departmental environments and uphold the standards expected.
* At times be the only member of the Clinical Pharmacy team accessible in a clinical area. Work independently but be aware of when to refer queries and problems to a more senior colleague.
* Successfully complete and maintain a dispensing re-validation programme and accurately label and dispense medicines under the supervision of a registered pharmacy professional following departmental standard operating procedures.

The pharmacy department operates a 7 day shifted working model which will include weekends and Bank Holidays.

Training and Qualifications
* Level 2 Pharmacy services apprenticeship OR have an NVQ level 2 qualification in pharmacy services skills that is approved by GPhC (or equivalent).
* Ability to achieve competencies for job role including in-house training and validations.
