This is an exciting and rare opportunity to join our team. We are looking for someone with experience of supporting children or young people with communication difficulties with an interest in developing their clinical skills in the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
The Kent and Medway Communication and Assistive Technology (KM CAT) Service is a specialist service established in collaboration with Kent County Council, KCHFT and NHS England. The Service assesses and supports children and young people who have no or little verbal communication and who need to use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Electronic Assistive Technology (EAT).
We support children and young people at home, in school, and in collaboration with other therapy services. We provide varied support in order to meet the needs of the child or young person, and in order to support those who communicate with them every day.
You will work as an integral part of our multi-disciplinary team. You will work closely with Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Teachers and Health Care Scientists.
The children and young people we work with have complex physical, sensory and learning needs, and so need highly personalised approaches which will be developed by the whole team.
You will learn how to use computer equipment and software, and will be involved in day-to-day management of this equipment. You will work alongside other Therapy Assistant Practitioners, and will be supported to learn new skills.
You will have an important role in delivering training courses to parents/carers and professionals. As the successful applicant, you will have experience of working in a school or a therapy environment. You will have experience of working with children and young people with disabilities. You will have experience of supporting children and young people who use AAC.
You will be able to work as part of a team, understanding your role in relation to other team members, and contributing to group discussions. You will be passionate about meeting the needs of children and families.
You may not have had experience of using voice output AAC and EAT, but will have an enthusiasm for learning and developing these skills. Successful applicants are required to have the qualification level specified in the person specification in order to carry out the job. The post will be based at The Old Railway School in Ashford, but will involve working across Kent and Medway. Car owner/driver essential, subject to the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act (1995).
