Role: Learning Support Assistance
Location: Gateshead. Based at The Bank, Chopwell, in a private learning space, with opportunities for accessing the community, museums, libraries etc. depending on young person’s interests.
When: 20 hours per week – (term time only 39 weeks of the year) Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9.00 -3.30.
Salary: £14.30 per hour
Background:
This young person is autistic and has a full-time EOTAS package following a mental health breakdown due to autistic burnout because of unmet need in mainstream education. They have a good understanding of their sensory profile and educational needs. They present with a Demand Avoidant Profile which means formal teaching and learning is challenging. They thrive in a low demand, interest-led environment and enjoy activities such as cooking, crafting, YouTube, playing games, and interacting with animals. They require a relational approach to learning and struggle to communicate their needs to those they do not feel safe around.
Currently, they are engaging fully in their educational package with support from their current LSA, who assists with accessing 1-1 tuition and working towards AQA awards covering practical skills.
The young person will be part of the recruitment process and has expressed a preference to work with a female who has a good sense of humor and does not 'treat me like a kid'.
Role Description:
The LSA/TA will be responsible for supporting a 10-year-old autistic child to engage with her alternative provision educational package, as listed below:
* Remove pressure or demand to prevent overwhelming the child during 1-1 interactions.
* Advocate for the child and support her to unmask around other adults.
* Assist with transitions between learning activities.
* Provide co-regulation and identify when the child is overwhelmed.
* Offer a safe and calm space for co-regulation and supervision during overwhelming situations.
* Support the child in accessing workshops and learning opportunities within the local community.
* Reduce anxiety to enable full cognitive engagement with learning.
* Enable a flexible and responsive package, ensuring consistent support.
* Support engagement with other key adults to gradually reduce reliance on a single adult.
* Initially provide transport support until the child can travel independently.
Person Specification:
* No specific qualifications are required, but an up-to-date enhanced DBS is necessary.
* Willingness to take and maintain safeguarding training.
* Good understanding of neurodivergence and commitment to neuro-affirming practice.
* Ability to offer a low-demand environment that follows the child's lead.
* Respectful communication with young people, following their lead.
* A full clean driving license is beneficial but not essential.
* Ability to write risk assessments or willingness to learn.
