An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic senior pharmacy assistant to join the Pharmacy Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance teams based at York Hospital.
The Clinical Governance team ensures the safe and effective management of medicines by monitoring practice to ensure policies and procedures are implemented effectively. The Quality Assurance Team ensures the quality of pharmacy services is effectively monitored and continually improves. You will need to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, be well organised and able to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
The entry banding is either a Band 2 or Band 3 dependent on prior Pharmacy qualifications and experience, to be discussed at interview. You must be prepared to work towards a Level 2 qualification in Pharmacy Services with dispensing elements if not already qualified. Candidates must have GCSEs in Maths and English at grade C/4 or above and meet the essential criteria of the person specification.
Experience of working within a hospital pharmacy would be beneficial but not essential as training will be given. Candidates should be keen to develop themselves, their role and the team.
You will be based at York Hospital but may be required to work at other sites on occasion. Core hours are Monday to Friday 08:45 – 17:15. You will contribute to the weekend (1 in 8 weekends) and bank holiday (1 per year) rotas. You will have a regular dispensary slot.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for assisting in the management of the quality management system within the department and ensure compliance with national legislation and medicines management standards.
Tasks include:
* Document control working with authors and approvers in a collaborative manner to ensure documents are reviewed and approved.
* Asset monitoring to include validation, calibration and servicing to ensure equipment and processes remain compliant with regulatory requirements.
* Recording of deviations within the department.
* Assist in the medical gas cylinder counts and audit actions.
* Assist with temperature monitoring and cold chain management, including queries from multi-disciplinary teams.
* Report product defects and follow up resulting actions.
* Assist in the management of controlled prescription stationery including:
Prescription receipt and processing
Reconciling accountability forms
Registering Non-Medical Prescribers on NHSBSA
Assist with the management of controlled drugs within the department and wider organisation including:
Dispensing training for pharmacy staff
Controlled drug returns
Assisting with queries and maintaining the authorised signature list
Assist with the management of spare medicine keys and key queries in the wider organisation
Perform internal audits and implement corrective actions.

Person specification
Education for Band 2
* Educated to GCSE Level or equivalent. Maths and English at C or above – or equivalent qualification. You must have proof of qualifications.
Experience and Knowledge for Band 2
* Ability to work to protocols, procedures and SOPs and suggest changes.
* Pharmacy Experience.
* Hospital Pharmacy Experience.
Skills
* Ability to use a range of computer programmes relevant to the post.
* Effective use of initiative.
* Ability to work in a team environment and alone.
* Understands the needs of customers, including patients and staff.
* Flexible to changing work routines and demands.

Education for Band 3
* QCF level 2 qualification in Pharmacy Services – with dispensing elements.
Experience and Knowledge for Band 3
* Competency training and experience in a specialist area of pharmacy service such as aseptics, stock management, or dispensing. If not already acquired, this must be gained within one year of taking up post.
* Ability to work to protocols, procedures and SOPs and suggest changes where necessary.
