As part of the ABS team, you will be working within an organization with several plan approval centers located across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. You will work on a variety of new build and existing ship projects both within the marine and the offshore sector as part of a medium sized team of experienced engineers. The work will involve both plan review and assistance to clients and surveyors on technical queries related to vessel structure, stability, load line, tonnage, fire protection and safety.
Performs engineering design review and analysis assignments normally involving a major project or several smaller or less complex projects. These projects by nature of their complexity and difficulty require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or science. Through broader and more technically challenging work assignments, will develop a thorough understanding of policies, methods and procedures.
What You Will Do:
With minimal or no supervision performs detailed engineering review of plans, as assigned, for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations and contract commitments. Offers technical advice to field operations and other technical offices. Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices but may include moderately complex problems such as the resolution of conflicting design requirements, material standards or coordination of activities among other disciplines. Proposes new approaches to problems encountered and makes recommendations for changes in methods, procedures or designs. Drafts technically accurate and timely reports, and responses.
Interacts with clients to identify and resolve problems in the area of technical expertise. Prepares accurate and timely weekly reports and billing on all work performed. Communicates the status of the current workload to all appropriate members of the team to ensure the needs of the clients will be met. Works as a team member within the group, but may work autonomously most of the time. Implements and maintains ABS Quality System requirements relative to responsibilities after undergoing ABS Quality System training.
You will perform work related to the following, firstly under guidance and later independently:
1. Vessel structure scantling review & Stability modelling and review
2. Load Line & Tonnage calculations
3. Fire and Safety plan review
4. General plan approval work for a variety of marine and offshore vessels and units
You will be responsible for providing work within the agreed time frame, deliverable and the applicable procedure. You will also take part in the management of internal and external client relationships. You will work as a team member within the group, but you will work autonomously, once trained, with minimal supervision.
What You Will Need:
Education and Experience
Degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering or other related disciplines; an MSc may be preferred. Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software. Exposed to Finite Element Method (course work or supervised research). Working knowledge of Class Rules, and Statutory Regulations (SOLAS, ICLL, MCA Large Yacht Code, MARPOL, SPS Code, MODU Code). Working knowledge of engineering software to perform structural and stability calculations. Design experience on small vessels (Yachts, High Speed Craft, Tugs), large vessels (Container Carrier, Tanker, Bulk Carrier) or Offshore Units. Familiarity with ship operations and shipbuilding practices is beneficial for the role.

Demonstrates understanding and ability to apply fundamental classification and quality concepts, practices and procedures. Knowledge of related technical disciplines required. The ability to identify, analyze and propose solutions to problems, and the competence to demonstrate complex problem-solving skills. Good command of the English language. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to work well with others.
Reporting Relationships:
The incumbent reports directly to the Director level or higher. This position does not have any direct reports.
