Research Associate – University of Cambridge
A position exists for a computational applied mathematician, from 1 January 2020, to work on developing a fundamental understanding of transition and ensuing turbulent mixing in stratified shear flows. The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Applied Mathematics & Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge and will collaborate closely with Professor Colm-cille Caulfield and Professor Rich Kerswell.
The role holder will conduct numerical simulations and analyse the results using a range of approaches drawn from recent developments in applied mathematics. Key areas of development include generalised stability theory, dynamical systems theory, reduced order modelling such as dynamic mode decomposition and various aspects of machine learning. Demonstrated familiarity with at least one of these areas is essential, and familiarity with instability, turbulence and mixing in stratified shear flows is also very desirable.
Duties include:
1. Running and analysing simulations
2. Developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives
3. Planning and managing their own research and administration, with guidance if required
4. Communicating material of a technical nature
5. Building internal and external contacts
6. Assisting in the supervision of student projects
7. Developing student research skills
8. Providing instruction or planning/delivering seminars relating to research area
The successful candidate will have or be about to receive a PhD in mathematics, engineering or a closely related area. The starting salary is dependent on qualifications and experience.
