The General Dental Council (GDC) regulates 125,000 dental professionals, including over 45,000 dentists and over 79,000 dental care professionals, who provide dental services across the four nations. Dental professionals play a vital role in the healthcare system, seeing millions of patients every year. The GDC has a crucial role in ensuring that the public are protected, that they have confidence in dental professionals, and that professional standards are maintained.
Our Council, the GDC's strategic body, is composed of 12 Members, six of whom are lay Members – from a variety of professional backgrounds - and six are registered dental professionals. Along with setting the GDC’s strategic direction, Council Members collectively ensure public safety and confidence, overseeing policy and performance, and holding the executive accountable for effective delivery. They also promote a positive organisational culture, modelling public service principles and engaging with stakeholders to build trust.
Position Overview
We are now looking to appoint two or three lay Council Members, who will be able to demonstrate a commitment to public protection, the ability to work effectively with an executive, and understand the organisational and business issues facing the GDC.
Responsibilities
1. At least one of the lay Members is likely to serve on the Council’s Audit and Risk Committee and will need to bring experience in accounting and risk management.
2. At least one of the other lay Members is likely to be asked to join the Remuneration and Nomination Committee, bringing senior-level experience in Human Resources and Organisational Development.
Diversity Commitment
The GDC is committed to delivering equality, improving diversity and being inclusive in all our work as a healthcare regulator and an employer. As part of this commitment, we actively encourage candidates from a diverse range of backgrounds to apply for this role.
