Job Description
Aerothermal Engineer
Full Time
Bristol
Why Rolls-Royce?
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an Aerothermal Engineer to join the Fluid Mechanics Turbine Aerothermal Team part of our Global Mechanical Systems Capability based in Bristol.
The Aerothermal Team is responsible for the development of Aerothermal capability. The team delivers technology from TRL1 -7 in conjunction with our strategic partners. Work within the team ranges from the original inception of design work, through NPI design and through into the EDP. The team supports Production and Fleet issues.
The Turbine Aerothermal capability covers gas path aerodynamics, blade aerodynamics, whole turbine modelling, Preliminary Cooling Design, Full Cooling design and analysis of NGV, blade and Segment Cooling Systems. It relies on skills in Computational Fluid Dynamics and thermal modelling at a range of levels of fidelity and testing capability in a range of TRL rigs. Design and capability generation relies on a knowledge and understanding of the interaction of these components both locally and at an engine level.
Rolls-Royce is one of the most enduring and iconic brands in the world and has been at the forefront of innovation for over a century. We design, build and service systems that provide critical power to customers where safety and reliability are paramount.
We are proud to be a force for progress, powering, protecting and connecting people everywhere.
We want to ensure that the excellence and ingenuity that has shaped our history continues into our future and we need people like you to come and join us on this journey.
We’ll provide an environment of caring and belonging where you can be yourself. An inclusive, innovative culture that invests in you, gives you access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities where you can grow your career and make a difference.
Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home, or another remote location. It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.
What you will be doing:
* Define requirements for turbine aerothermal, ensuring an accurate and complete flow-down and capture of higher-level requirements. This includes system, sub-system and component aerodynamic, thermodynamic and combustion modelling requirements.
* Define concepts for all turbine gas path aerothermal systems that meet requirements and evaluate using appropriate analytical methods to support accurate trades at platform and powerplant level and optimised concept selection.
* Define and conduct capability acquisition, methods development and applications relating to people, process, methods, tools, knowledge management and technology. This may be conducted internally or externally and may involve securing internal or external funding.
* Perform verification and validation activity to ensure that requirements have been correctly met and that all turbine aerothermal related aspects meet expectation.
Who we’re looking for:
* Bachelor of Science degree or above in Engineering, Physics or Maths providing an understanding of Thermodynamics, Aerodynamics, Heat Transfer and Computational Fluid Mechanics.
* Technical knowledge of or interest in aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and gas dynamics and have an understanding of cross-discipline engineering concepts which include but are not limited to manufacturing, mechanical analysis and product definition.
* Experience in Aerothermal design and analysis, whether through academia or industry is desirable.
* An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking on a range of technical problems and make balanced decisions across technical and business parameters.
* Membership of a relevant professional body appropriate to region. In the UK - attained/ working towards Chartered status is preferred (and equivalent regional variations).
