University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust is embarking on the next phase of its strategy, transformation, and improvement journey. We are now seeking a director to take us to the next level. In aligning our improvement infrastructure with our strategic and transformation ambitions, this post merges two current posts.
The individual we are seeking will have a passion for and skillset in leading teams on a transformation journey. Reporting directly to the Deputy Chief Executive, this role requires an individual who provides visionary leadership, creates a culture of continuous improvement, and fosters innovation. The Director will collaborate with operational colleagues, clinical staff, and other key stakeholders to drive large-scale improvement initiatives and transformative changes.
The successful candidate will have a track record in strategically leading and delivering improvements in quality and safety within a healthcare setting. They will possess strong communication and problem-solving skills, along with a deep understanding of change management approaches and quality improvement methodologies. This role offers an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact on patient care and organisational performance.
Main duties of the job
The Director of Strategy, Transformation & Improvement will be a visible, inclusive and collaborative leader, ensuring the implementation and delivery of the Trust’s strategic priorities, consistent with the provision of the highest possible standards of compassionate care and the very best patient and employee experience. The post holder is accountable for leading on the development of strategic implementation plans, ensuring preparation and presentation of operational plans is consistent with the output of the strategic planning process. They will lead on performance oversight, monitoring, and assurance through further development and application of the performance accountability framework and the integrated performance reporting structures and mechanisms.
The post holder will be responsible for establishing the formal links from strategy development into improvement through planning, transformation, and improvement. The post holder will be accountable for leading the Trust's annual and medium-term planning processes and be responsible for the development of the Trust's analytical capability in line with its ambition to become a proactively data-driven organisation.
The post holder will work closely with partners across the health and social care system to ensure our plans are aligned to the objectives of the Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals: Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications
* Master’s degree (or equivalent postgraduate level ability and experience)
* Demonstrable record of continuous professional development
Experience
* In-depth and extensive knowledge of NHS management issues including: Priorities within the NHS, National agendas and initiatives, Clinical governance and risk management, Staff management, Performance management issues
* Significant exposure to Trust Boards and sub-committees
* Significant experience at a senior level in the NHS with responsibility for operations, planning, performance, strategy, and improvement
* Significant experience in leading change
* Significant experience in staff development including individual staff appraisal and personal development
* Project management experience at a senior level in a public sector setting.
* Experience of NHSE regulatory regime
* Experience of leading and implementing change programmes
* Evidence of setting ambitious attainable targets
* Evidence of the impactful use of Improvement methodology

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
