Job overview
Are you looking for the challenge of maintaining complex, cutting edge medical technology? There is a vacancy for a Specialist Electronics Technician based in the Radiotherapy Department at the Royal Preston Hospital.
You will have the opportunity to work on state of the art medical linear accelerators and associated radiotherapy equipment.
The department currently has 6 Elekta Versa and 2 Elekta Harmony Linear Accelerators.
All linear accelerators have VisionRT Surface Guided Radiotherapy systems installed, the department is a centre of excellence for SGRT.
We have 2 GE wide bore CT scanners and a superficial X-Ray therapy unit.
A phase of Linear accelerator replacement is underway, currently one being commissioned, one installed in early 2024 and one due for replacement in 2025.
You should have basic engineering skills and be able to use hand, power and machine tools. A practical knowledge of IT and networking is essential.
The successful applicant will join an electronics/multi-skilled section specialising in linear accelerator support. Dedication, flexibility and willingness for some out-of-hours work are essential for this role.
Although the vast majority of your time will be spent at Royal Preston Hospital, we work closely with other centres within the North West Radiotherapy Operational Delivery Network and some working at these sites will be required.
Visits to the department to discuss the post and to get an idea of what we do are encouraged.
Main duties of the job
1. To perform planned and unplanned maintenance of radiotherapy treatment delivery and associated IT systems.
2. To manufacture bespoke beam limiting devices to required tolerances using lead and high-density low melting point alloy.
3. To perform planned and unplanned maintenance of beam measuring equipment.
4. To design, manufacture and test mechanical and electronic devices as requested by Radiotherapy Physicists and Therapeutic Radiographers.
5. To install, modify and upgrade radiotherapy and associated equipment.
6. To liaise with equipment manufacturers for maintenance advice and guidance.
7. To attend manufacturers technical training courses.
8. To manufacture bespoke and replacement test aids.
9. To provide technical training on engineering or technical matters to other staff within the department.
10. Order high capital replacement parts following machine breakdown.
11. Carry the departmental phone on a rotational basis to provide first contact for radiotherapy equipment problems.
Working for our organisation
The engineering section is a small, highly skilled, close knit team within the Oncology - Medical Physics department at Royal Preston Hospital.
It is important that coming to work should be a pleasure not a chore so the use of humour within the engineers is strongly encouraged.
We work a shift system of 3 extended days over a 6 day, Mon-Sat, week. Although the days can be long this is compensated for by the 4 days off shift each week.
The department is an approved training centre for the IPEM register of Clinical Technologists and training will be provided to achieve membership.
