About the role
The University of Leicester is seeking a dedicated IODP Logging Research Associate to join our esteemed School of Geography, Geology and the Environment. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for acquiring and analysing petrophysical core and borehole measurement data for the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and other drilling research projects.
A significant aspect of this position involves spending approximately two months at sea as an IODP shipboard participant, overseeing the quality assurance and control of downhole logging and core physical properties data during Expedition 501: New England Shelf Hydrogeology. You will manage downhole logging and petrophysical programmes, provide expert advice to the Expedition Science Team, and ensure the successful acquisition and distribution of data. Additionally, you will be expected to initiate personal research projects based on IODP data, collaborate to secure research funding, publish findings in peer-reviewed journals, and represent the University at international IODP meetings and major conferences.
About you
The ideal candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent in Earth Sciences or a related discipline, with a robust background in downhole logging operations pertinent to scientific ocean drilling. Proficiency in industry-standard downhole logging software, such as WellCAD and Techlog, is essential. You should possess a solid scientific foundation, enabling you to adapt swiftly to evolving research requirements, and have prior experience with IODP expeditions, including extended periods at sea.
Exceptional analytical and technical skills are required, along with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an international team. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are crucial, as is a high level of proficiency in English. While not mandatory, experience in petrophysics, marine geology, or geophysics, as well as a history of working in challenging environments or participating in ocean research projects, will be advantageous. A proactive attitude, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to contributing to the University's research excellence are highly valued.
