King Edward’s School is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated individual for the role of Graduate PE Assistant (Hockey Specialism) to join a strong, very supportive and friendly department in an exceptional school from September 2025.
An opportunity to work at King Edward’s School, Birmingham as a hockey coach and assist the PE programme has become available, from September 2025. The role will suit anyone looking for a future in teaching, or coaching, or for someone who is passionate about working with young people in sport.
The role requires the successful candidate to be available for a full time (during term time) role including supporting extra-curricular activities in early evenings (until 6pm) and on Saturdays throughout term time. We are looking for someone who can lead the coaching of a hockey team and support the teaching of PE lessons. The ability to support the sport programme with another area of expertise, such as Strength & Conditioning or Video Analysis would be advantageous but not essential.
The role has a salary of £18,495 (FTE; £23,537)
The Sports Department
The PE & Sports Department has the use of eight rugby pitches, two sports halls and a brand new Strength & Conditioning Centre. Additionally, three AstroTurf hockey pitches, four cricket pitches and nets, as well as a 25m swimming pool are on site. The school maintains excellent links with Worcester Warriors, Warwickshire Cricket Club and other elite sporting institutions such as, ‘The Priory’ Tennis and Squash Centre.
King Edward’s seeks to ensure all boys have a fully rounded education and as such, sport is placed at the centre of many boys' lives. Physical Education is compulsory in all years up to and including Year 12, and all boys will take part in at least one 2-hour games session per week. For those that want to, there is the option of specialising in one sport for as many as five sessions per week, while others may wish to choose from a range of over 40 extra-curricular activities.
Our coaching philosophy is to put pupils at the centre of every decision on and off the pitch, guiding them where necessary but ultimately putting the onus on them to ensure that they are developing the values that we strive to foster: Creativity, Adaptability, Resilience, Self-Reliance among others.
Sport is delivered annually throughout each week and on Saturdays with late finishes some weekdays and some full days on Saturday, although there is some scope for flexibility if an individual has their own high level sporting commitments.
The Graduate PE Assistant (Hockey & PE) will report to the Director of Sport.
Duties including:
● Assisting with PE lessons
● Leading teams
● Coaching of games afternoons
● Supporting lessons in the organization of equipment and resources
● Involvement in the co-curricular programme
● Supporting after school training practices
● For the right candidate, opportunities to assist with Academic lessons - Sport, Exercise and Health Science
● Assisting teaching colleagues in the PE department
● Any other activities as deemed appropriate by the Director of Sport
