Location: Glasgow, London, Bristol, York or Derby
Type: Permanent
Working Style: Office/Home Hybrid Working
Do you want to be part of the green transition? Can you lead for a company that says 'No' to fossil fuel projects? Are you experienced in project-related ecological solutions? Then, join us to shape a sustainable and liveable world.
Create Solutions that will enable a better tomorrow
To assist our project teams to enhance biodiversity in our engineering designs, we are looking for an Ecology and Biodiversity Lead to join us. Working on sustainability and environmental issues, you'll liaise with project teams and customers to co-create, implement, and monitor ecology and biodiversity aspects of our projects and assist in further developing our biodiversity strategy in the UK. You'll also collaborate with COWI's biodiversity teams in the USA, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway to share experience.
Your key responsibilities will be:
1. Working with COWI's engineers to identify from project inception how to devise biodiversity-enhancing designs and maximise environmental benefits.
2. Working across multidisciplinary teams, utilising scientific principles and practices as well as existing and innovative technology to develop technical solutions to complex problems.
3. Engaging client-facing project teams and customers to promote positive biodiversity practices at a project and organisational level.
4. Working with colleagues internationally to further develop COWI's approach to biodiversity and sustainability challenges across the company.
5. Coordinating biodiversity assessments and be competent at using the DEFRA/Natural England biodiversity metric.
6. Establishing reporting metrics to capture the impact of environmental initiatives.
7. Using technical proficiency to author, coordinate, and contribute to reports and assessments, as well as the preparation of EIAs / ESs, DCOs, and planning applications.
8. Managing sub-contractors for ecological surveys in a wide variety of habitats across the UK.
9. Liaising with the Project Director, project partners, design team, client representatives, and stakeholders.
10. Contributing to the consent consultation process.
11. Supporting the pursuit of relevant business development opportunities, developing client relationships and input into bids and tenders, as required.
Your skills. Our team. Together we design the future.
The first step to success in this role is that you are eager to collaborate with the people around you, whether they are colleagues, partners, or customers. Developing ties with others is something you do by acting respectfully and delivering on your promises. And you never get set in your ways but keep exploring new insights and ways to improve.
On top of that, you'll have:
1. A relevant degree or equivalent qualification.
2. Membership of a relevant professional organisation (e.g. CIEEM).
3. Substantial project-related ecological experience in large multi-disciplinary civil engineering projects (including some of tunnels, bridges, marine works, offshore wind).
4. Experience in the development of project documentation such as biodiversity management plans, construction environmental management plans, or protected species licences.
5. A flair for creating practical solutions, innovations, and concepts to enhance the biodiversity of project green/blue areas, construction compounds, linear infrastructure, as well as structure and earthwork surfaces.
6. Working knowledge and hands-on experience with coordination of terrestrial and marine biodiversity surveys and assessments.
7. Considerable experience in preparing biodiversity inputs to the EIA and planning process, the implementation of biodiversity net gain, underpinned by an understanding of UK environmental and planning regulations.
8. Good communication and inter-personal skills to work collaboratively in a diverse multi-disciplinary team.
