Consultant in Respiratory Medicine
York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
We are delighted to invite consultants to apply for a position within the dynamic Respiratory department at York Hospital. This is an exciting time to join our department as we continue to expand and develop our sub-specialties.
We are looking for a passionate consultant who is eager to further their chosen sub-specialty whilst supporting general respiratory patients both in outpatient and inpatient settings. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop a specialist interest to complement the other members of the department. We would particularly welcome applicants with an interest in interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, sleep and NIV, Respiratory failure, although any specialist interest would be welcome and supported.
We offer a severe asthma clinic, TB clinic, lung cancer service, Long COVID clinic, Sleep/NIV service and Cystic Fibrosis service. We are soon to begin a local Lung Cancer Screening Programme across our Trust and are working collaboratively across the primary/secondary care interface as well as with the ICB and regional colleagues to develop integrated approaches to delivering respiratory care including launching a new breathlessness diagnostic pathway.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic and dynamic individuals who will work well within our diverse and friendly team to develop inpatient and outpatient services. In line with service provision discussions, there may be scope for additional programmed activities, which will be clarified during the recruitment process for potential candidates.
We welcome whole-time, part-time or job share applications and we are committed to supporting flexible job plans and will work with you to mutually agree your activity commitment. Candidates will currently contribute to the General Medical on-call rota, though in the longer-term a separate respiratory on-call rota is envisaged. We are also developing proposals to accommodate cross site working within the Trust in certain sub-specialties.
There are also exciting opportunities for research and teaching within your specialist field as we work closely with Hull York Medical School (HYMS). This provides opportunities to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervising resident doctors and allied health professionals. As a department we maintain close links with the Regional Respiratory Specialist Training Programme and currently provide supervision & training to three Higher Specialist Trainees in Respiratory Medicine at our York site.

Person specification
Qualifications
* Hold a medical qualification
* Registered with and hold a licence to practice with the GMC
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Respiratory Medicine or General Medicine via; - CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) - CESR or European Community Rights (within 6 months of completing a training programme recognised for the award of CCT or equivalent)
* Experience in Respiratory Medicine
* Substantive NHS experience
* MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research
Clinical practice/ competence
* Able to demonstrate a high level of Respiratory clinical experience and skill
* Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit
Teaching & supervision
* Experience of teaching undergraduate and post graduate trainees
Leadership
* Capable of building trust and confidence
* Able & willing to take on leadership roles
* Ability to organise and manage the department targets

Please be aware that all new employees starting work with us will be charged for the cost of their DBS check if it is required for the role.
