GLL is looking for an Assistant Manager to work at Lee Valley White Water Centre. This opportunity is perfectly suited to an Assistant General Manager who will thrive in a hands-on customer-facing role where you are coaching and leading your team to deliver outstanding operational standards.
As the Assistant Manager at this unique water sports venue, you’ll play a key role in managing the delivery and standards of the activity products to our customers as well as promoting watersports to communities. This role focuses on shaping a clear strategic framework to deliver our operational and financial targets – all while forging stronger links with our business and community partners. It’s a role that offers huge variety. While enjoying a hands-on management role, some of your time will be desk-based, ensuring compliance and supporting the administration involved in running a busy leisure centre.
Naturally, we have safety procedures in place – but ultimately, you’re given the freedom, support, and training to run your centre as your own and drive innovation as you see fit. You’ll thrive on the autonomy to manage your own time, all with the support of our wider head office function.
Continuing your strong track record of achieving significant business objectives, product growth, and excellent customer service, you’ll be a real people-person in a current Assistant Manager position looking to take that next step. Expertly handling a budget, your skills, knowledge, and passion for watersports will be key – as is the gravitas needed to develop relationships with our senior management teams. You will be required to hold a FAAW, a valid moderate water kayak coaching qualification (advanced coaching qualification desirable) or Raft Guide Qualification (holding both is desirable). It is also desirable that applicants hold or are working towards their Paddlesport instructor and Paddlesport Safety provider awards.
What you will do:
1. Develop and implement operational plans for your area of responsibility
2. Train and assess staff in watersports products
3. Provide leadership in your area of responsibility
4. Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, ethical, and social requirements
5. Encourage innovation in your area of responsibility
6. Lead, plan, and implement change
7. Help team members address problems affecting their performance
8. Build and sustain collaborative relationships with other organisations
9. Manage finance for your area of responsibility
10. Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
11. Manage a programme of complementary projects
12. Manage business processes
13. Develop and implement marketing plans for your area of responsibility
14. Work with others to improve customer service
15. Build your organisation’s understanding of its market and customers
16. Manage the achievement of customer satisfaction
What you’ll need:
1. The proven ability to effectively manage a staff team, especially in a watersports environment
2. Experience working in a watersports environment with appropriate paddling qualifications
3. The ability to analyse business issues and prepare business and local marketing plans
4. The ability to research, prepare, justify, and present project reports
5. The ability to persuade and influence staff at all levels
6. The ability to produce results to demanding deadlines and work on several key issues simultaneously, prioritising effectively
7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. IT literate
8. The capability to contribute to the wider strategic development of the organisation
9. Thorough knowledge of leisure centre operations, programming, and financial management
10. Knowledge of key performance indicators and their application and how they can be used to effect improvement
11. Up-to-date knowledge of developments in the leisure, fitness, and lifestyle environment
12. Thorough understanding of the characteristics and qualities that customers want from leisure health and fitness centres
13. A proven track record of managing in busy wet and dry leisure centres
14. Delivery of a track record of significant achievements in the areas of business and commercial objectives, product growth, development, and excellent customer service
15. Evidence of achieving results and making change happen through leadership and influence of a team
