About the role
We’re seeking a strategic Commercial Director to own and drive the P&L for the BBC Gardeners’ World brand. This role combines audience and commercial strategy, cost management, and operational delivery of our brand commercial and marketing activity across magazine, web, app, social and email channels.
The ideal candidate is a proactive leader with a growth mindset, experience in the publishing and gardening sectors, and the ability to foster cross-functional collaboration and inspire a high-performing team.
As a Commercial Director you will:
* Own and manage Gardener’s World P&L, focusing on driving commercial performance, careful cost management, and supporting revenue growth across all platforms.
* Develop and execute integrated audience and brand strategies, leveraging print, digital, and live channels to boost audience engagement and commercial success.
* Drive cross-media and especially digital and social adoption, partnering with relevant brands and influencers to expand our reach.
* Apply experience in newstrade publishing and subscription models to support customer acquisition and retention, and strengthen and expand the brand's footprint.
* Leverage customer data and knowledge / experience in live events to integrate audience touchpoints and create synergies across print, digital, and in-person experiences.
* Inform leadership teams of key financial and operational indicators, writing board reports and strategy updates and business reviews (MBRs).
* Lead the marketing and brand commerce teams, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and delivering impactful campaigns.
* Work closely with the Head of Content and senior editorial leads to ensure content strategy and products are tailored to audiences, meet agreed KPIs and support business goals.
* Collaborate closely with central teams such as Customer Marketing and Subscriptions, Advertising and Commerce, including special projects (e.g., app initiatives) to drive effective outcomes.
* Represent Gardeners’ World within the Extended Leadership Group, ensuring cohesive communication with the ELG and subsequent cascade of comms to the Gardeners’ World team.
* Support the Group MD with the overall brand strategy, including embedding the culture and shaping skills for future success.
* Ensure we operate within the required BBC commercial guidelines.
Minimum Requirements:
* Extensive experience in media and publishing, specifically in subscription models, newstrade, and digital content, with familiarity with the gardening industry preferred.
* Strong commercial and growth mindset, with a proactive, can-do attitude to getting things done.
* Obsessive in driving understanding of audience preferences, behavioural and market trends, and identifying growth opportunities.
* Data-driven and analytical with a proven ability to develop insights-based strategies and measure results effectively.
* Strong people management skills, adept at nurturing talent and supporting team development. Proven ability to influence and collaborate effectively within a matrixed organization.
* Proven experience and strategic acumen in commercial leadership and P&L management.
* Proficiency in digital platforms and marketing tactics that span both traditional and modern channels.
