We are seeking a motivated and experienced staff nurse to join our team. We provide detailed medical and nursing assessment for elective, day case, surgical inpatients.
The successful candidate will have an interest in peri-operative care and be able to thrive in a busy area with many time pressures and deadlines. However, this post also provides a great deal of job satisfaction and a chance to provide one-on-one patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
* Working unsupervised to hold pre-operative assessment clinics to plan the patient's stay in hospital and ensure appropriate selection of in-patient and day surgery.
* Conducting comprehensive assessments of patient's requirements, using guidelines, knowledge, and experience to provide preparation for elective surgery.
* Assessing medical, social, and psychological needs of the patient, devising solutions if appropriate or referring to other health professionals.
* Identifying any anaesthetic risk factors and referring to the anaesthetists as appropriate.
* Requesting or performing relevant medical tests according to criteria.
* Overseeing results and, based on judgement, referring to anaesthetist or acting as necessary.
* Identifying factors that may delay discharge and acting on or referring as appropriate.
* Confirming and recording patient details appropriately, entering data accurately on the relevant computer system.
* Directly communicating and liaising with medical staff to resolve any identified issues related to the patient's admission for surgery.
* Liaising with the Booking Office and Ward Staff to ensure smooth admission processes and identification of specific needs and requirements.
* Confirming admission details and providing both verbal and written information/advice, giving the patient an opportunity to ask questions.
* Liaising with GPs and Practice Nurses as necessary (e.g., requesting further information or blood pressure checks).
* Maintaining absolute confidentiality in respect of all medical and nursing records.
* Obtaining and developing additional skills that may be required (e.g., phlebotomy, ECG recording and interpretation, developing new nurse-led roles).
* Working within the local practices of each site of the service.
* Maintaining a team approach to the service at all times.
* Acting at all times in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice.
* Maintaining and extending professional knowledge to keep abreast of current trends in line with PREP requirements.
* Participating in audits and trials.
