Company Description
Under contract to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), LGC hosts and operates the UK’s combined Official Medicines Control Laboratory (OMCL) for chemical testing and the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) Commission Laboratory. We help the MHRA protect public health by ensuring that medical products are safe for those who use them. The laboratories are operated under a Government Owned, Contractor Operated (GOCO) model at our site in Teddington. We will initially be based at the Teddington site. However, we will be permanently relocating its National Laboratories operations to The Priestley Centre, Surrey Research Park, Guildford around Autumn 2024. Job Description
We are looking for an Analytical Chemist to support the activities of the MHRA Laboratories, by undertaking physico-chemical testing of chemical and herbal reference materials, method validation and method development whilst providing leadership and direction to more junior staff. The successful candidate will need to work optimally as part of a large and lively team of ~30 analytical scientists!
1. Analysis of samples over-the-counter medicines, antibiotics, herbal products, and packing material using HPLC, GC, Mid IR, UV spectroscopy, wet chemistry, and GC/LC-MS
2. Drafting analytical reports/methods and safety assessments
3. Running and interpreting analytical data for validation and quality control
4. Adhering and contributing to an effective quality system, ensuring work aligns with ISO/IEC 17025 standards
5. Routine maintenance, daily performance checks and periodic calibration of equipment
6. Leading projects and coordinating staff to ensure key performance indicators are met
7. Supporting general lab activities and delivery as the need arises
Qualifications
You will have a sound background in Chemistry at degree level, with theoretical knowledge of HPLC, GC, IR, UV spectrometry and titration. Practical experience in the use of at least two of these techniques is desirable.
You will be a well-organised and self-motivated worker with a high degree of tenacity for solving technical problems. Your practical work should be methodical, tidy and accurate. Your computing skills should include a familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel. You should have good written and verbal communication skills, and will be encouraged to keep full and neat work records. Keep a clear and organised bench, adhering to health and safety regulations.
