An established and well-respected specialist contractor with nearly 30 years of experience restoring some of London’s most historic and prestigious buildings is seeking a Financial Controller to take full ownership of its finance and accounting function. This is a key role reporting directly to the Managing Director, offering the opportunity to play a vital part in the company’s continued success. We are looking for a highly organised, detail-oriented, and trustworthy professional who can oversee all financial operations while contributing to the ongoing development of finance processes. For the right candidate, there is scope to progress into an advanced management position. Key Responsibilities: Manage weekly payroll and subcontractor payments, including employee onboarding and CIS verification. Maintain accurate payroll records and ensure timely submission to HMRC. Monitor staff sickness, absences, and holiday allowances in coordination with the office manager. Oversee P11D reporting, staff expenses, mobile phone, and credit card transactions. Process and input invoices while ensuring accurate and timely supplier payments. Manage credit control and cash flow monitoring. Prepare financial reports for external accountants and auditors. Oversee bookkeeping, prepayments, accruals, and bank reconciliations. Prepare management reports, including profit & loss statements, balance sheets, and budget variance analysis. Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and revised forecasts. Handle VAT and other tax returns. Liaise with clients, banks, HMRC, insurance providers, and other external stakeholders. Implement new financial processes, including a paperless system and full BACS payment system. Skills & Experience Required: Proven experience as a Finance Manager or Financial Controller within a small to medium-sized business (ideally within construction, with a turnover of around £13m). Strong knowledge of CIS (Construction Industry Scheme) regulations and HMRC compliance. Proficiency in Sage Line 50 (or similar accounting software), Eque2 Construct, and payroll systems. Advanced Excel and Word skills. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, suppliers, and internal teams. Strong attention to detail and ability to manage a busy workload effectively.
