Digital Services bring trusted design, data and technology know-how to the delivery of lifelong learning. Digital Services are responsible for the digital information, systems and technologies used by staff and students across The Open University. Covering all aspects of digital technology at the OU, from sourcing and maintaining systems, through to providing frontline IT support for staff and students.
The Senior Infrastructure Engineer role reports directly to the Head of Products (Infrastructure) and is part of the Infrastructure Products Team responsible for the architectural design, security, development, maintenance and support of the enterprise infrastructure for the Open University.
Information Technology are seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to work alongside the three other Senior Engineers to support the development of the enterprise infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
* To act as subject matter experts responsible for leading the adoption and transition of Infrastructure and Cloud Services.
* To facilitate the innovation and development of the Open Universities digital transformation in all aspects of the IT architecture.
* To research and deliver evolving infrastructure and Cloud Services, identifying opportunities to enable and enhance the delivery of change projects within the Open University.
* To provide expertise and support in Cyber security technologies and practice including security by design, vulnerability management and assurance to the infrastructure teams in the development and continued support of the infrastructure.
* Support the management of the product lifecycle roadmap to ensure the infrastructure remains relevant and identify opportunities for innovation.
* Perform design and development activities on large programmes of work, ensuring consistency and integrity across design elements.
* Enforce creation of high-quality solutions to specification that complies with technical, security and quality enterprise standards, by monitoring and ensuring QA processes.
* Technical expert providing advice and guidance to all areas of IT in a defined area of expertise.
* Ensure consistency of use in build and deployment processes.
* Support the Product team in incident management and help resolve problems when they arise.
* Contributes to the investigation, diagnosis and resolution of problems.
Skills and Experience
Essential
* Educated to Degree level or equivalent professional qualification.
* An experienced system engineer managing a large complex infrastructure with successful record in the implementation of infrastructure services.
* Good knowledge of technical platforms and impact on business systems.
* Knowledge and experience of infrastructure, software tools, security, networks development methods and standards including some of but not limited to Cloud Services, Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows Server, Entra ID, PowerShell, SAML, OAuth, system integration.
* Cyber security knowledge and experience including:
o understanding of secure by design principles, encryption, and network security
o familiarity with multiple operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and macOS
o understanding of cloud platforms and their security measures
o skills in threat hunting, penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, and security assurance.
* Experience in leading the development of solutions and systems architecture within a large complex IT environment.
* An understanding of developing design solutions that integrate with existing or new services, including cloud services and infrastructure.
* Able to demonstrate development skills from research, design to post-implementation support.
* Knowledge and experience of creating and applying standards and best practice in IT delivery.
* Good organisational, interpersonal and communication skills. Capable of leading, motivating and developing others.
* Ability to produce design specifications and documentation that meet user requirements.
* Problem solving – experience in finding resolution to any given problem and/or working with a team to identify the appropriate response to achieve the best outcome.
* Experience of implementing and design of virtual and cloud computing such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS).
Desirable
* Knowledge and experience of server architecture and systems management, integration and automation in a virtual or cloud infrastructure environment. You will have configured systems for high volume use.
* Experience working in multidisciplinary development teams using multiple related technologies.
* Understanding of Service Management standards including Incident, Problem and Change management using ISEB ITIL Foundation (ideally at v4.0).

It is anticipated that a hybrid working pattern can be adopted for this role, where the successful candidate can work from home and the office. However, as this role is contractually aligned to our Milton Keynes office it is expected that some attendance in the office will be required when necessary and in response to business needs.
