The Department for Transport (DfT) is recruiting for a Senior Transport Modeller within the Demand Analysis Team (DAT).
DAT, as part of the Transport Appraisal and Strategic Modelling (TASM) team, sits at the heart of the DfT’s analytical communities. TASM manages Transport Analysis Guidance (TAG) for transport modelling and appraisal, develops National Transport Models to support policy developments and transport investments through its Modelling Cell, works closely with stakeholders to strengthen evidence base and provides analytical assurance to the Department’s work.
DAT is a multidisciplinary, friendly and inclusive team, consisting of operational researchers, transport modellers, and economists sitting in several grades. It values diverse expertise, innovative thinkings, collaborative approaches and the developments as individuals and the team as a whole. DAT plays a vital role in in delivering the DfT’s strategic priorities, being responsible for estimating both personal travel demands and non-personal movements through the Department’s National Trip End Model (NTEM and TEMPro), van traffic forecasting model and multi-modal freight model. It also provides guidance on modelling uncertainty, which includes publishing the Common Analytical Scenarios and promoting scenario-based analysis. Furthermore, it ensures TASM’s analyses are supported and managed under efficient frameworks and digital provisions and collaborates regularly with colleagues from different professions, such as social research, to generate the best collective insights.
This role will work on the modelling framework of TASM’s transport models to improve quality and management. This will involve proactively seeking creative ways to enhance models’ capabilities with advanced computing technologies and digital provision, while having opportunities to work on a range of analysis through TASM’s Modelling Cell (a joint unit within TASM focusing on modelling work). The precise responsibilities could be shaped around the postholder where preferable under TASM’s priorities.
Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
* Working with stakeholders and developing an analytical framework for TASM’s models and TAG Databook to ensure input data, model runs and results are managed in a systematic, easy to access and insightful way based on Scenario Based Analysis.
* Working as part of the Modelling Cell in TASM to lead tasks and support others for technical improvements and policy developments.
* Supporting the work to advance TASM’s digital and modelling capabilities in data engineering and cloud computing.
* Scoping, commissioning, managing and assuring relevant modelling and research from external consultants.
* Delivering presentations/workshops to both internal and external stakeholders.
