Purpose of job
The British Academy of Jewellery (BAJ) is looking for an experienced and passionate Deputy Course Leader to join our team on a fixed-term maternity cover contract. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in shaping the next generation of jewellery designers and makers through an innovative, industry-focused degree programme.
About the Role
As Deputy Course Leader, you will work closely with the Course Leader to ensure the effective delivery of the BA (Hons) Jewellery Design & Production course. You will oversee curriculum planning, teaching, student support, and assessment while contributing to course development and quality assurance processes. This role requires strong leadership skills and the ability to support students and staff in a creative and nurturing academic environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Assist in managing and delivering the BA (Hons) Jewellery Design & Production course.
2. Support curriculum planning and ensure it reflects contemporary jewellery design and industry needs.
3. Deliver teaching in jewellery design, making, and related disciplines.
4. Oversee student progress, attendance, and academic support.
5. Lead assessment and feedback processes, ensuring clarity and fairness.
6. Contribute to course development, validation, and quality assurance activities.
7. Foster partnerships within the creative and jewellery industries to enhance student opportunities.
8. Collaborate with colleagues to support the Academys teaching and learning strategies.
9. Ensure compliance with academic policies and procedures.
Person Specification
We are looking for a dedicated individual with:
10. Relevant undergraduate and post-graduate degree in the subject or a closely related discipline
11. PG Cert or equivalent experience
12. A detailed knowledge and deep understanding of contemporary jewellery processes and practices in relation to international jewellery academic and industry contexts
13. Knowledge of subject specific research in an academic and/or professional environment
14. Knowledge of delivering teaching and learning within a specialist subject base
15. Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (desired)
Experience
16. Experience of teaching & assessment in a higher education environment in a relevant field of practice
17. Experience of working with emergent technologies applied critically in a professional and/or academic context
18. Experience of working with diverse materials, applying and investigating them in innovative jewellery designs or related practice
19. Curriculum development experience
20. Familiar with debates and research relating to decolonising the curriculum and awarding gaps within the HE Sector
21. Evidence of using contacts within subject peer group to develop partnerships or collaboration
22. Evidence of research, knowledge exchange and/ or professional practice that contributes to the advancement of the subject and is relevant to the goals of the Course and Academy
23. Experience of leadership and management of year group or course (desired)

Contract
Part-time (0.6 FTE), Fixed-Term Maternity Cover
Salary
£38,000 - £48,000 FTE (pro-rata)
